I Guess He Could Be Using the High-End Premium Stuff......

Hey, today we lose a comic strip of 85 or so years. Annie, which was introduced to America as Little Orphan Annie has come to an end. For more info on Annie's history and possibilities for the strip, you can read this.

Annie 6/13/10
Annie
I honestly don't see how this is any different from all those other times Annie has been kidnapped. Except that Annie is noticeably more upset about it. Maybe the strip will return soon and showcase Annie living with the Butcher of the Balkans and developing Stockholm Syndrome or something.

Drabble 6/13/10
Drabble
This strip would be more topical if it was 2008 when gas were hovering around $4.00 for everyone in the country. Gas is $2.40-$2.70 here and it doesn't cost $60 to fill the tank on a car that size. And from my research, the average cost of gas is about $2.70 and to fill a 16-gallon tank would cost $43.20. Not $60!!

God, I hate Drabble.

And this is where we leave today's Daily Comics Review...

For Now

65 Years and Counting....

Betty White, star of such classic TV shows as Mary Tyler Moore, Golden Girls and many, many other was honored at the Screen Actor Guild Awards with the Lifetime Achievement Award which commemorated not only her 88th birthday but also her 65th year of acting. I am a huge fan of Ms. White and wish her all the best. Here's to 65 more years! Wait, something's wrong with that sentence...

Garfield 1/24/10

Yes, Garfield. Murder Jon. There shall be no more snow this winter. Anywhere!!

One Big Happy 1/24/10

"Go get a cab!" Classic episode of I Love Lucy right there. Sadly, this episode will now forever be sullied because it was used in this strip.

Joe has massive delusions of grandeur.

Frog Applause 1/24/10

If there is a God and if God is a man then this would be God's glory hole.

Annie 1/24/10

I love the art in Annie but the lack of pupils (which I know is the art style of this strip) is a bit distracting. But you know if they started adding pupils to the characters people would be outraged.

Broom Hilda 1/24/10

*Sigh* Not a joke anywhere in this strip. I was the Maple Leaf Festival a few years ago (every third weekend in October in beautiful Baldwin City, Kansas) and this woman behind us said "a ladybug landed on me" and the guy next to her said "better get it off, they'll bite you". Ladybugs? Bite? Whatever crazy old man.

FoxTrot 1/24/10

If I were Paige or if Morton were gay, I would not be able to answer this question because I suck at math. I mean, I really suck at math.

Ginger Meggs 1/24/10

Because typically caffeine doesn't occupy possibly valuable time that you could be using for more important things than trying to defeat New Super Mario Bros. Wii with Blue Toad.

Family Circus 1/24/10

Or it can also be apparent that:
1)you're a whore and will sleep with anything;
2)you are a 40-year-old man-child;
and 3)you don't bathe.

Otter Pun Day 2010, DCR-Style

Are you people excited? You OTTER be, because it's Otter Pun Day! Otter Pun Day is a day when words and phrases that sound like "otter" are replaced with the word "otter". I realize this really isn't a pun, but I don't really care what you think about this, and you OTTER let me have my fun. As for most holidays, I've complied every comic strip about Otter Pun Day to show to you. Here we go:

Time-Mind Sync-Warp
Photobucket...
...
...
That's it. Just one, probably because Otter Pun Day is a holiday I made up last year, and Time-Mind Sync-Warp is... well, my comic. Well, now that I've OTTERly abused my position here, onward to actual comics reviewing! All comics are from today (January 8th, 2010)

6 Chix

That is one bold freakish potato-man. Any closer and his face will be right in them, and then they'll probably get kicked out the restaurant and the date will be OTTERly ruined. He OTTER try and contain his libido until later in the night.

Annie

For a while, Annie was devoid of the craziness that it contained the first few days that I did comics reviewing, but these past two weeks... I'm not sure if flesh-eating gas counts as crazy as much as it counts as very gruesome and grisly, and it looks like we'll get to see this man melt into a puddle. It OTTER be a fun time.

Beetle Bailey

I have a story concerning Beetle Bailey, but I shall save that for another time. For now, I will simply say that I don't think Sarge OTTER be letting random civilians into Camp Swampy based upon statements that they were once in the armed forces. I'm not certain, but I'm reasonably sure that it would be against regulations and several people would get into trouble over it.

Crock

I have seen and heard this joke about a million times, but until now, I wasn't sick of it. Now I am. You killed this joke for me, Crock. You OTTER be ashamed of yourself.

Henry

What the heck was Henry thinking, bringing a bunch of bees into a flower show? It's one thing if the bees were buzzing around a bunch of flowers, but to just go and bring in a freaking beehive? That's just insane, and while Henry isn't known for thinking things through, this is just above and beyond anything he's done in the past. He OTTER have given this plan a second thought.

New Adventures of Queen Victoria

Oddly enough, the final panel describes a good majority of the "New Adventures of Queen Victoria".

The OTTER... er... Other Coast

If the dog has no thumbs, then how was he able to turn on the TV in the first place? Or pick up the remote? Or hook up that box thing on top of the TV? These questions need answers.

Many Little Deaths

Hey everybody. I'm not doing a massive post showcasing all the New Year's strips because I really didn't feel like doing another one so soon after Christmas. All of them were pretty much about CRAZY RESOLUTIONS, going to bed before midnight on New Year's Eve, and black-eyed peas. Oh, and Father Time and the New Year's Baby were all over the place.

Also, hey, I started doing a new web-comic today. And it's Friday Night, which means it's time for fighting. I have a title to defend, after all.

Lio, 12/31/09

I wonder if Lio's mother is among the zombie horde?

Hi and Lois, 1/1/10

Hi and Lois has been a comic strip since 1954. Trixie, apparently, has only aged a single year. If we some math, then we will discover that Trixie will outlast the Earth itself and will eventually become a space baby. Either that, or the Flagstons just keep cycling out members of their "family" who become too old with younger doppelgangers. Either is likely.

Annie, 1/1/10
Been a while since we checked on Annie, the story of a pupil-less orphan girl who has heart-warming adventures thanks to her rich guardian. Let's see what the strip is up to:

Ah, of course! A mysterious organization is supervising some sort of research raid into an underground bunker and people are being burned to death!

Wait, what?

Eh. Hope everyone has a happy new year.

Better late than never?

Hey everyone. I'm back again, so let's get right down to the question on everyone's lips: is Annie still insane?

Annie, 8/20/09
Photobucket
An ancient Atlantean with a pet dinosaur interacting with cowboys while trying to keep said dinosaur from getting spotted by the Air Force. Yep, still pretty insane. What's more is that Annie seems to be resigned to her fate of being in an insane comic strip.

Tina's Groove, 8/20/09
Photobucket
The fact that there's such things at catscopes is probably even more insane than Annie. On a different note, I've always wondered why Tina looks so depressed in every single comic strip. She constantly looks like she's on the verge of tears, which is not very groovy.

Bliss, 8/20/09
Photobucket
Frankenstein's monster would suck pretty badly at basketball, I think. He'd try to do a jump shot only to realize he left his feet behind. He may be able to dunk, however, but I don't think his wrists would be very good at dribbling.

Close to Home, 8/20/09
Photobucket
This would sound no different from normal talking, unless she's just saying the letters. In which case, that's really freaking stupid. I do like the name Katie Hunter, though. It deserves to be used for something much better than a lame one-panel cartoon.

Natural Selection, 8/20/09
Photobucket
Part of me feels bad about picking on this cartoon, but the geeky part of me is shoving that part out of the way. Godzilla was played by a series of Asian men, all of relatively normal stature save for the fact that they had pretty good strength and stamina. They needed it because the costume weighed so much. And with that, I'm off.

Geekiness abounds!

Hey there, cats and kittens. Are you ready for the Internet's hippest comic strip reviews? Then you should go find them, because I'm just doing what I usually do while I'm here.

Better Half, 8/13/09
Photobucket
I take issue with this strip because, while that man is the stature of a hobbit, he clearly does not have hairy feet or pointed ears. Also, the word hobbit is not capitalized when being used in that manner. However, I am wondering if one could go to that job and claim to be an orc or an elf while all decked-out in a costume. That would be quite an interesting place to work.

Annie, 8/13/09
Photobucket
Crom? The same Crom who is a part of the Conan the Barbarian mythos? Does this mean that Annie and Conan the Barbarian share the same universe and history? Could Annie be the reincarnation of Red Sonja? Is Daddy Warbucks working with Thulsa Doom? This just opens the door for so many hypothetical, yet now plausible, situations! Also, that dinosaur is obviously a carnivore. Look at those teeth. Those are for tearing the flesh off bodies, they are.

Gasoline Alley, 8/13/09
Photobucket
Speaking of Conan the Barbarian... I hope that Conan does exist in this universe and that he'll eventually come to Gasoline Alley and just stop this strip. I'm not sure, but I think it's the oldest strip around, and it really doesn't deserve to still be around. So get right on that, Conan. I don't care which Conan. Just get on it.

Betty, 8/13/09
Photobucket
Why are Americans so interested in doing stuff other cultures do when, in the not-too-distant past, we have fought wars to get away from those other countries and to stop them from doing things that they do? I realize that the United States is on good terms with Europe, but really, if George Washington could see us now he'd slowly shake his head and wonder where he and the other forefathers went wrong.

Bo Nanas, 8/13/09
Photobucket
Cleveland (where I live) supposedly has the best public transportation in North America. Considering how... not bad, really, but terribly uneven it is here I can only imagine what it's like in other places. That said, I would not take food or drink offered to me on a bus. I can only imagine it would be, like the service, terribly uneven. I wouldn't let them come near my face, either. Especially not with hot oil.

Flo and Friends, 8/13/09
Photobucket
This comic strip is either about assisted suicide, incest, or an old man's wish to be sexed to death. In any case, it's disturbing and rather depressing.

Natural Selection, 8/13/09
Photobucket
Attention comic strip person: Fish are not Pokemon. They do not evolve into bigger, different fish. Yes, some Pokemon are fish-like, but that does not mean anything. Also, please ignore that one "Legend of the River King" game for the Game Boy Color, in which fish COULD evolve into bigger fish. Foolish comic strip person. Unless, of course, the joke is that the grouper ate all the other fish, in which case all of what I just said just goes to show what a geek I am.

Non Sequitur, 8/13/09
Photobucket
I don't see what a lifeguard could really do against a giant cephalopod anyway. Beat it with that boogie-board thing, I guess?

Herb and Jamaal, 8/13/09
Photobucket
Stop lying to yourself, Jamaal. Seriously.

Funky Friday?

Bound and Gagged, 8/7/09
Photobucket
Actually, I think turning a fire extinguisher on a bunch of ants would work very well against them. They're just ants, after all. Getting hit with that much stuff at once would surely destroy them.

Annie, 8/7/09
Photobucket
I have no idea what's happening in this comic strip, but this is just so charmingly insane and all over the place that I can't help but look at it and think... well, what I just wrote.

Crankshaft, 8/7/09
Photobucket
FOOLISH PAM! ED CRANKSHAFY CARES NOT FOR THE CONTINUAL EXISTENCE OF PETTY REPTILES! HE IS CRANKSHAFT, HE WHOSE BITTERNESS AND ANGER HAVE WARPED THE WORLD AROUND HIM, TURNING IT INTO A WORLD OF HATE AND MISERY! LO, HE IS THE ONE WHO BRINGS DOOM TO HIS WORLD. HE IS THE REASON "FUNKY WINKERBEAN" IS NOT FUNKY AT ALL. ONLY THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO DIE FOR HIM GAIN EVEN A MILD REPRIEVE. HE IS CRANKSHAFT! FEAR HIM!

The well is still running dry.

I pointed out yesterday on my blog that right now seems to be a slow time for comics mockery. This trend is continuing.

Annie, 8/6/09
Photobucket
Judging from that creature's teeth, it's a carnivore, not a herbivore. Therefore, the reason he's hungry is because he's not getting his proper diet of meat. I'd watch out if I were you, Vah-Lin-Tan. Hold on... "Back in Old Atlantis, or wherever"? This comic strip is fantastic.

Close to Home, 8/6/09
Photobucket
I'd be more than happy with seeing this show. Especially since it's on a stage, rather than the normal "Sea World" type venue.

Back with a FUNgeance

It's my turn again, and I'm back with a FUNgeance! It's like a vengeance, only fun. You know what else is fun? The Meekrat Entertainment Group. Now that my clumsy self-promotion is out of the way, let's mildly poke fun at comic strips. And, in some cases, endlessly nit-pick! FUNgeance indeed!

Annie, 7/23/09
Photobucket
I just wanted to say that "Little Orphan Annie" continues to be a far stranger comic strip than I ever imagined. I wish they'd put some of this weirdness in the musical rather than have her running around singing about tomorrow and whatnot. That would be a pretty neat musical.

Brainwaves, 7/23/09
Photobucket
The reason is that he was a prince and she was forced to do manual labor for her wicked stepmother, which did not involve her leaving the house or, really, anything that would allow her to meet the prince beforehand. Also, maybe he was inbred.

Eek, 7/23/09
Photobucket
That woman has no social graces at all. If you're dining with a potato, you don't order potato-based meals. I bet if she was having lunch with a cow or dinner with a chicken, she'd order veal and eggs, because she probably also likes eating the young of all species. Including human babies.

Maintaining, 7/23/09
Photobucket
Apparently, this strip's days are numbered. While I'm sorry that the cartoonist will be out of a job, I'm not that sorry because this strip annoys the heck out of me. Still, hope he finds work elsewhere. Also, this strip annoys me far less than "Mallard Fillmore", "Prickly City", and "The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee", and the art in this one is far better than all of those (except, arguably, "Edison Lee") so why do those get to stay while this one bites the dust? The comics page... it's totally unfair. There is another strip I hate far worse than all of those, which I refuse to even say the name of. Oh god, it is a terrible terrible strip. So, yeah, good luck with your future endeavors, Nate Creekmore. Your strip annoyed me, but it certainly didn't deserve to die.

Scary Gary, 7/23/09
Photobucket
So they're insinuating (or flat-out telling us) that Frankenstein's Monster is a homosexual? He has a bride, you know... though this could allow for a modern re-imagining of the character where he's shunned both for his monstrous appearance and sexual preference, most likely in a overtly religious town. This would also add subtext to the flaming windmill imagery.

Shoe, 7/23/09
Photobucket
Yeah, let's use a decades-old TV show as a punchline. I realize that they had that movie a year or so ago, but still... just because something was culturally relevant once doesn't mean it still is.

Imminent Death and Destruction

Hello. Some of you might know me from the Meekrat Entertainment Group, which shares a forum with this site. Anyway, here I am, with a whole load of comics to be mildly lambasted. I think there's twelve of them or something, but expect the number to dwindle as time goes on.

Cathy 7/9/09
Photobucket
Cathy is all about the slow domination of machine over man. It would seem our only hope of surviving the Robopocalypse is Cathy herself, still concerned with little things like interpersonal communication, in which case we're all pretty much screwed. I look forward to seeing her scream "ACK!" as the robots torture her.

Edge City, 7/9/09
Photobucket
Only Edge City has the moxie to tackle the ever-growing problem of Facebook addiction. Abby obviously needs help, and she wants it, will she be able to tear herself away from Facebook long enough to end this downward spiral? Considering how she's looking for answers in the very den of the demon, I doubt it. The next few weeks will likely consist of her slowly wasting away, or being forcibly put into Facebook rehab. It'll be a laugh riot.

Heathcliff, 7/9/09
Photobucket
I just like the fish in a bicycle helmet, and I wanted to share it with all of you.

Lola, 7/9/09:
Photobucket
Do you know who would really hate to see that? Luke Skywalker. He'd be all jealous of the little Hispanic girl getting to ride on his father's shoulders. He might even turn to the Dark Side himself and show Dora the Spanish word for "Getting decapitated with a lightsaber." It's probably an onomatopoeia of some sort.

Mallard Fillmore, 7/9/09:
Photobucket
Hey, look! The fetus is telepathically communicating about torture! So it's about abortion and torture! Sadly, this is about a hundred times better than the usual nonsense this strip puts out.

Annie, 7/7/09:
Photobucket
Supposedly, this is Little Orphan Annie. I have no idea if that's true, because there's a decapitated robot head bouncing down a street and and a guy named Xaxos being all angry and stuff. Ah, wait, creepy soulless Annie eyes. Even on the robot head... is that a decapitated cyborg head? Annie is far more interesting than I thought.

Birdbrains, 7/9/09:
Photobucket
Insecticide?! That bug wasn't trying to do drugs, he was trying to kill himself!

Committed, 7/9/09:
Photobucket
I have to call shenanigans on this, because the CandyLand board game has an actual, viable, movie-capable storyline and characters. You don't need to create some stupid villains hi-jacked from a dental PSA.

Eek, 7/9/09:
Photobucket
On a similar note, Godzilla is totally capable of messing up Japan with kids. He does it all the time, and brings the kid with him, or the kid gets kidnapped, or becomes the loneliness-birthed hallucination of a wimpy Japanese child. I'd imagine Japan would properly screwed if Godzilla showed up with a whole brood of young'uns, though, so maybe the parent Godzilla is just making sure that Japan is a viable source of destruction for years to come.

Maintaining, 7/9/09:
Photobucket
I think the better question here is: Is Halfrican-American a real term?

Reality Check, 7/9/09:
Photobucket
First and foremost, I realize it's a comic strip, so for the sake of the gag I'll just assume that's how bows and arrows work. They could have just said, "My crossbow went off", though, which would have solved all sorts of problems. I'll also assume a human being can live through that. My main issue, then, is how the arrow is lodged in his head. If he was cleaning the bow and arrow like any normal person would, the arrow would actually have gone through his leg, or at least it would be perpendicular to the angle it's at now.

Skin Horse, 7/9/09:
Photobucket
Sausage Picnic sounds dirty. Also, I can't figure out what's more disturbing: the fact that the dog is expecting the sausages to be poisoned, or the fact that the man cheerfully exclaims that they're not... this time.

Well, that's my inaugural effort here. It was filled with death and bereft of logic. And fun?
