This Just In: Cathy's Fat and Gizmo Hates Books

Daily commentary on The Born Loser have returned to my site so maybe you could go over there for second, why not?

Cathy Classics 1/2/11
Cathy
I don't care that Universal Press Syndicate is too chicken to just force a new comic strip on papers who continue to carry Cathy even though it has come to an end, I just have a problem with the timing of the strips.  Y2K jokes?  Seriously?

Doozies 1/2/11
Doozies
But doesn't Santa have all that slave elf labor?  I mean, they have to do something when they are finished making toys.

Girls & Sports 1/2/11
Girls & Sports
"And there's Jimmy and Michelle, he cheated on his wife who happened to be her best friend.  And over there is Heather and Dan, she lied to her boyfriend by saying she didn't have feelings for Dan but then they moved in together..."

Henry 1/2/11
Henry
I like this one but I wonder how Henry was able to switch places with the dummy.

Frank & Ernest 1/2/11
Frank & Ernest
I don't like this one...

Chuckle Bros. 1/2/11
Chuckle Bros
Sometimes this strip is funny.  Other times, not so much.  This is one of those "not so much" moments.

Beetle Bailey 1/2/11
Beetle Bailey
Oh my God!!  Gizmo has snapped and is rampaging around Camp Swampy throwing away everything that is obsolete.  Quickly, Mort Walker!  Run!  Run away!!

Slylock Fox and Comics for Kids 1/2/11
Slylock Fox
Bob chose to go with "lack of air/there's no sound" for the solution instead the obvious "stars don't have points" and "there is no planet with rings that close to Earth".  Not mention flying saucers of that type do not run on dioxilene methane but on bicarbon hydrolium.

Wizard of Id 1/2/11
Wizard of ID
Yes, this comic is one or two days late (depending on when you want to see your New Year's comics) but he's too a brand new year even though it will essentially be just like the old one only with some slight changes.

Until next time, I remain...

Who here has yet to go to the redesigned Meekrat Entertainment Group?  Who here regularly goes to my site Watch This Space?  If you haven't already you should trot on over there and catch up on some reading.  And let's not forget the other sites by the other contributors:  Dog Spelled Forward, Stupid Inventor and The Bird Feeder.  Go now and show them some love then come back here and finish reading this.

Cathy 10/3/10
It's Cathy's last day and while I haven't been paying attention this week because the plot has been very, very stupid, it ended exactly the way I heard it was going to end.
Cathy
Cathy goes out with neither a bang or a whimper but with irrevocable proof that she and Irving have been getting it on.  If you think Cathy is a neurotic mess now, just wait until she has a child of her own.  Hell, it looks like the child is already a neurotic mess.

Thanks for 34 Aack-tacular years.

The Elderberries 10/3/10
Elderberries
Speaking of retired comic strip characters, Charlie Brown and the comic strip Peanuts turned 60 yesterday.  While Charles Schulz admitted he never had Charlie Brown kick the football there is a strip where Rerun may or may not have pulled away the football.
Peanuts '99

Lio 10/3/10
Lio
Lio says good-bye to Cathy (and The Boondocks and Opus, four and two years later respectively) by leaving Lio alone to man the comic pages by himself.  You'll have your work cut out for you, Lio because I'm pretty sure Garfield won't help and Marmaduke will probably just maul you then have sex with your mangled body.

The Dinette Set 10/3/10
Dinette Set
It's been awhile since I've showcased the awfulness that is The Dinette Set so here it is.  Burn its awfulness into your eyes!

Brevity 9/27/10 - 10/3/10
A lot of people who were confused about this week's Brevity finally got the punchline today.  But first here are the rest of the panels from the past week.
Brevity 9-27
Brevity 9-28
Brevity 9-29
Brevity 9-30
Brevity 10-1
Brevity 10-2
And finally....
Brevity
Bravo, Brevity.  Bravo.

Born Loser 10/3/10
Born Loser
I find it amusing that the kids on the other team hate Wilberforce so much that they are all willing to lose a game just so they can dogpile on and possibly injure him.

Is that chocolate milk Brutus is drinking?

US Acres and Shameless Self-Promotion

I really don't have many comics to comment on today. Just two. However, I would like to turn your attention to the newly revamped Meekrat Entertainment Group! Go there and marvel upon it! Now then, comic commentary...

Cathy
Photobucket
So Cathy is ending by pulling a "One Year Later" and just making all of Cathy's dreams come true, eh? It doesn't really end until tomorrow, but I don't comment tomorrow. So farewell, Cathy. I hardly ever noticed or cared about you.

Wondermark
Photobucket
I just thought that maybe there should be something else on here, so here's a random web-comic! Why this one? I like the guy's rant, and the punchline. Then again, Wondermark is always quite strong.

Now then, remember the news I promised you from yesterday? Do you remember US Acres (or Orson's Farm, if you're from the areas that it was called that)? Well, it's back, in webcomic form! I have no idea how long it's been back. I think the site just launched today with the laziest cartoon imaginable but there's two months of comic strips already in the archives. I checked the site yesterday, after all, and there was no US Acres to be found. Hey, actually, here's today's lazy US Acres cartoon:
Photobucket

I know I'm probably one of the only people excited about this strip's return, and that probably has a lot to do with nostalgia, but still. US Acres is back! You can read the two months of new strips on the site, and if you want to read some of the strip's original run, Peter Paltridge of Platypus Comix uploaded a bunch of them a while ago.

Almost Forgot

I forgot that today was a day I do this. I remembered when I read about something tailor-made for me to talk about on this blog, and I thought, "It'll have to wait until it's my day." Then I remembered it was my day! I'll talk about what I was going to talk about tomorrow, but for now you can read this nonsense. Also, the Meekrat Entertainment Group. It's good stuff.

Cathy
Photobucket
Well... Cathy is ending. This offers no clue how, but it's still sort of sad, for some reason. In the final panel, will she and her husband just be sitting there, emaciated and skeletal, dead to the world, with the bones of their dogs upon their laps? That would be messed up.

Brevity
Photobucket
I spent about twenty minutes looking this one over, and I offer this challenge to you: find the joke. If there's not a joke, then why did they even bother submitting this strip? I expect this sort of thing from certain comics, but I expect more of you, Brevity.

Girls and Sports
Photobucket
You may well know that I hate "Girls and Sports" with a passion. I still don't wish the cartoonist any ill will, and I can't help but think that the shoddy coloring done by one of the syndicates will reflect poorly upon him. It's one thing if the guy's strip is thought poorly of because it's terrible, but quite another if people hate it because someone messed up scanning it in or whatever.

600

Not only is today Easter (how come when Jesus comes back from the dead it's a miracle but when other people do it it's a zombie?) but it's also the 600th post of the DCR!! Everyone rejoice with chocolate eggs and hollow bunnies!

Candorville 4/4/10
Candorville
I hate when people try to argue with me in the comments sections of my blog but I have a simple solution for that. Not approving the comment. It's my blog and last I knew we still had the right to freedom of speech.

Daddy's Home 4/4/10
Daddy's Home
Peeps are disgusting. Now whenever I see Peeps I'm going to picture them riddled with syphilis.

Funky Winkerbean 4/4/10
Funky Winkerbean
I don't get it. How in the hell could Tom Batiuk take a strip that's not supposed to be depressing and completely turn it depressing? How much does Tom Batiuk hate life?

Dennis the Menace 4/4/10
Dennis the Menace
In what appears to be the least menacing thing Dennis has done since 1971, he has hidden Easter eggs around the yard for his neighbor, Mr. Wilson, to find. Hopefully the eggs are some form of symbolism like Dennis is now going to torture Mr. Wilson like a KGB Agent would.

Basic Instructions 4/4/10
Basic Instructions
Nothing to say. I just liked this.

Cathy 4/4/10
Cathy
Really, Cathy? 17 chocolate bunnies? 17?!? God, no wonder you're fat.

Family Circus 4/4/10
Family Circus
And it wouldn't be Easter without the Keane kids and their speech balloons with no tails.

Happy Easter everyone!!

Melancholic Ramblings

It's Friday again, folks. Time marches on, inexhaustible and unforgiving. To make the long trek towards your inevitable death less melancholic, why not take a look at Carafe? It has varied comedic stylings, and the current installment will teach you a valuable lesson. Or how about Time-Mind Sync-Warp? Today's nostalgia and misogyny flavored installment will make you feel bittersweet memories of years past and anger at the mistreatment of women. With that, let's focus on comics which appeared today in newspapers and Internets across the world, viewed by hundreds if not thousands of people. You should feel humble, a mere speck of sentience in a sea of humanity.

Off the Mark and Strange Brew, 01/29/10

We start off this lovely Friday with two panels with the same joke. This time, it's about how bears use the woods as a bathroom. We can't go anywhere but up from here, folks!

Arctic Circle, 01/29/10

Especially when we go to Renaissance-era full-frontal nudity. I know it's a work of art and all and you can't really see anything, but if that one old episode of "The Simpsons" is any indication, then people would still get into a huff about this. Especially since it's supposedly a newspaper strip.

Cathy, 01/29/10

If I were Cathy, I'd probably have killed myself years ago. But if I were Cathy in today's strip, then I wouldn't get too excited. Irving is probably smart enough to realize you're holding the DSL cable or whatever, and he intends to plug it back in. Then again, he did marry Cathy, so we can't be sure he's very smart at all.

Moose and Molly, 01/29/10

They never found Moose's body after this ill-fated sled trip.

Gunshow, 01/29/10

I have a question, comic strip. How did that dog survive the fall? Unless it's Demidog. Then it makes perfect sense.

xkcd, 01/29/10

This comic only makes me feel sad for the poor robot. I shall go weep with sadness, and eat cookies in order to make the sadness end. It will not work: I do not have nearly enough cookies.

With that, have a good a weekend folks.

Hot, Non-Living Action

Another glorious Wednesday is upon us!

In other news, have you heard about Carafe? It's a webcomic sort of deal. It doesn't have a storyline and pretty much anybody can submit a comic if they want. I did. It's my debut as a creator of comics and not just a complainer-about-comics. I hope to see you next Tuesday*, when it will run.

*sorry, I couldn't resist.**

**This is for those of you that didn't get it. Click here to find out. Warning: not for younger viewers and/or those offended by things.

Brenda Starr 1/27/10

Because I'm short on time, I'm just going to read the bold words.

Late meeting EDA. EDA? Eco-Developers Association nearly sexy dead body. Harry else needs poor man.

Anyone else confused as to why that guy thinks that the EDA is almost as awesome as necrophilia?

Cathy 1/27/10

He wants to have sex with his . . . phone? iPod? What is that thing?

Well, whatever it is I think it's a safe assumption that it's a better lover than Cathy.

Brewster Rockit 1/27/10

I can't help but feel like Toby the HR bot is similar to something I've seen before . . .

TOBY 1/27/10 and Dilbert 1/23/10

I guess it's not a direct ripoff of either one, but an amalgamation of both of them.

Does that mean that both Pandolph and Adams can sue? I'm pretty sure they won't, but could they if they wanted to?

Also, neither Dilbert nor TOBY are very funny in these particular instances.

Of Handjobs and Anuses

Today is Tuesday. This means that the week is almost 3/7ths complete. Unless you start your week on Monday, then it's only almost 2/7ths complete.

Does anyone care about these intro pieces? I find them to be really stupid most of the time. Which is sad since I write them.

Anyway, here's the other stupid things I write.

Dog Eat Doug 9/22/09
dog eat doug
I have only one question: how did that small dog get on the table? Is there an unoccupied chair that we can't see? Or is the table just extremely low?

That really is my only complaint because dogs actually do act that way.

Frog Applause 9/22/09
frog applause
So the giant wiener is asking for a handjob? While I don't find it particularly amusing I will give Frog Applause credit for being creative when it comes to disguising sexual terms in a comic strip.

The Argyle Sweater 9/22/09
the argyle sweter
Do I spy a turkey anus? I think that I do. It makes me happy when naked creatures are drawn with anatomical correctness.

Also, it's just plain funny to see a turkey anus.

Cathy 9/22/09
Photobucket
A new twist on the 'Smile and nod and slowly back away' theory on dealing with crazy people.

If I was a female I would be upset with the constant stereotyping of women as complete psychological disasters in Cathy.
