I Hate These Comic Strips

I love comic strips. I've done book reports in school about comic strips and its beginnings. I like just about every comic strip and there are a few that I love (none are currently being produced, BTW). There are several comic strips that I hate. Hate is different than not liking. There are strips I don't like (Herb & Jamaal, 9 Chickweed Lane and Cathy) but there are strips I genuinely hate. And here they are:

Drabble 4/18/10
Drabble
Drabble is like Paul Blart only less cute, adorable and funny. Drabble is the story of a slightly older than middle aged man working as a mall cop while also trying to continue to raise his adult son Patrick. Drabble is a mess of bad puns, stupid jokes and basically aiming for the lowest common denominator.

Curtis 4/18/10
Curtis
This strip actually demonstrates one reason why I hate Curtis. Curtis' dad smokes only because of stress. Curtis has routinely expressed his disgust with his dad's smoking but Curtis' dad doesn't change. Granted, Curtis doesn't go the normal route by showing his dad how slowly he is killing his own family whenever he's "stressed" out but his dad could at least try.

The Dinette Set 4/18/10
Dinette Set
The main hatred I have for The Dinette Set is there is always too much going on. I've often said that the stupid words and stuff strewn around the panels (like the "M.I.T.: Moron In Training" in today's strip) is to distract from the fact that the comic itself isn't funny.

Mutts 4/18/10
Mutts
I used to like the comic strip Mutts. Then something happened. It got preachy. The strips starting telling me to protect our animal friends and to go to a shelter and adopt a dog or cat. I don't need a mediocre comic strip telling me to go do stuff and I'm sure everyone under the age of 70 agrees with me.

Shoe 4/18/10
Shoe
Do we even see P. Martin Shoemaker more than once a month anymore? Since Jeff MacNelly passed away in 2000, Shoe has just been languishing on the vine just waiting to die. Amazingly, I noticed a few months ago that Susan MacNelly (possibly Jeff's daughter or granddaughter) has begun helping out on the strip and that the strip is possibly becoming funnier. Hopefully, there will come a time that I can remove this strip from this list.

Wee Pals 4/18/10
Wee Pals
I'm sorry but kids making cutesy racist comments is just wrong. Every time I read Wee Pals, I die a little on the inside. But I can't stop looking at it because it's like a train at a railroad crossing for me. And I can't stop looking at those trains.

Zippy 4/18/10
Zippy
I read somewhere that Zippy has never been funny. There are no jokes in Zippy and that the good artwork and intricate detail is to cover up that fact. The strip looks really good therefore you laugh at it because you don't want to look stupid. Well, Zippy is an abomination of comic strips. To me, it is the worst. A monkey could smear shit on a piece of urine green paper and I will still find that more culturally relevant and funnier than Zippy.

Ginger Meggs 4/18/10
Ginger Meggs
I don't know why I hate Ginger Meggs. Maybe it's because he's got red hair, maybe it's because he's Australian maybe it's because Ginger is everything I hate in a comic strip about a kid. He's just plain annoying. It also makes me cringe to think that this strip has been around since 1921!

Fred Basset 4/18/10
Fred Basset
I don't hate Fred Basset because it's British. I hate it because it's just not good and doesn't have a point to it. I looked up Fred Basset on Wikipedia and the article is written in a very British format. Also, there's a section that basically dissects the strip saying that a lot of the strips do not have jokes, an ending or even a purpose!! Yeah, that's my idea of a good comic strip, one without a purpose.

Frazz 4/18/10
Frazz
I used to like Frazz, then it became too smart for its own good. It began making fun of people and pointing out flaws in the American language. And the kids? Smart-asses. 9 times out of 10 I want to backhand these little turds.

Housebroken 4/18/10
Housebroken
I don't know what's going on in this strip but I'm pretty sure you have to be high to understand it. I read Housebroken every week but it has yet to make me chuckle or even acknowledge it as being worthy of being on a newspaper page. I want to say it's trying to be like Bloom County but that's an insult to Bloom County.

Dennis the Menace 4/18/10
Dennis the Menace
This comic showcases what is currently wrong with Dennis the Menace these days. Where's the menacing? I have a book which features the first two years of DTM's existence and he was a lot more menacing back in the 1950s. For example, in one comic he ties a swan's neck in a knot; in another he ruins a hot dog vendor's business by stealing his cart's umbrella; and he shuts his friend in a refrigerator just to prove that the light goes out when you shut the door. I want this Dennis back and I don't care if it gives children bad ideas. I just want to see Dennis do more menacing stuff like beating a teenage babysitter leaving a permanent scar on her chin.

Like more comic-related garbage? Then you should head over to my site where every Thursday I talk about comics in book book and strip form. Plus there's that whole Born Loser thing I do.

The First Sunday of Spring

Ah, it's another beautiful Sunday and it's the second day of Spring and I am surrounded by 4-6 inches of snow. First up, visit my site. Second, join The Daily Comics Review on Facebook. We have both a fan page and group page (of which I am apparently an admin) so let the networking begin. Third, enjoy these comics.

Basic Instructions 3/21/10

Something along these lines happened to me years ago. A friend was sick but she wouldn't see a doctor mainly because she couldn't afford it but also because she was fairly certain the doctor wouldn't tell her anything she didn't already know. I also went through this when my earring got infected and I had to have it "surgically" removed.

Pluggers 3/21/10

Thing is, he's still looking at her breasts. I mean, look at those things. They are huge!! Would it be considered bestiality or would this enter into more of a furry fetish?

Dick Tracy 3/21/10

Tracy better be careful. He's starting to show sympathy for people.

Also, the flames of Hell are here to take the body away.

I Fell Down the Stairs

This is pretty funny but did anyone else get the "I came as soon as I got here" line in the first panel? Unless he's talking about something else in which case, ew.

Girls & Sports 3/21/10

I have problem with girls talking about how other pregnant women look. I have a problem with girls acting like they are the only ones who have ever been pregnant. There's a reason there are almost seven billion people in the world so you are nothing special.

Ginger Meggs 3/21/10

I know Ginger Meggs takes place in Australia, mate, but what is this FWWWOOOAAARRR!!! thing I've been seeing lately? Just for kicks, I looked up FWOAR on the Urban Dictionary and it's defined as: "That's so sexy, I might get a hard on". And the term is labeled Australian. So I guess Ginger is getting a major hard on over movie special effects which I don't think is very healthy.

Amazing Superpowers

I have been told by an ex-girlfriend that my blood has a nice sweet taste to it. Now it's your job to figure out what happened that got her to taste my blood.

Badly Drawn

OH MY GOD!! Malibu Stacey has a new hat!!

Daddy's Home 3/21/10

Who cares about the comic? Are they watching the hit FOX TV show, "House"?

Wee Pals 3/21/10

*Grumble* I feel a hate crime coming on...

65 Years and Counting....

Betty White, star of such classic TV shows as Mary Tyler Moore, Golden Girls and many, many other was honored at the Screen Actor Guild Awards with the Lifetime Achievement Award which commemorated not only her 88th birthday but also her 65th year of acting. I am a huge fan of Ms. White and wish her all the best. Here's to 65 more years! Wait, something's wrong with that sentence...

Garfield 1/24/10

Yes, Garfield. Murder Jon. There shall be no more snow this winter. Anywhere!!

One Big Happy 1/24/10

"Go get a cab!" Classic episode of I Love Lucy right there. Sadly, this episode will now forever be sullied because it was used in this strip.

Joe has massive delusions of grandeur.

Frog Applause 1/24/10

If there is a God and if God is a man then this would be God's glory hole.

Annie 1/24/10

I love the art in Annie but the lack of pupils (which I know is the art style of this strip) is a bit distracting. But you know if they started adding pupils to the characters people would be outraged.

Broom Hilda 1/24/10

*Sigh* Not a joke anywhere in this strip. I was the Maple Leaf Festival a few years ago (every third weekend in October in beautiful Baldwin City, Kansas) and this woman behind us said "a ladybug landed on me" and the guy next to her said "better get it off, they'll bite you". Ladybugs? Bite? Whatever crazy old man.

FoxTrot 1/24/10

If I were Paige or if Morton were gay, I would not be able to answer this question because I suck at math. I mean, I really suck at math.

Ginger Meggs 1/24/10

Because typically caffeine doesn't occupy possibly valuable time that you could be using for more important things than trying to defeat New Super Mario Bros. Wii with Blue Toad.

Family Circus 1/24/10

Or it can also be apparent that:
1)you're a whore and will sleep with anything;
2)you are a 40-year-old man-child;
and 3)you don't bathe.

Baby-Eating Sunday

Sunday comics for all, in glorious COLOR!!

Ginger Meggs 1/10/10

What kind of moronic person would do this? You never post on Facebook when you are skipping work or school because even if it's legitimate, it still raises questions.

Adam@Home 1/10/10

I've never seen it but I thought that "Transformers" was a decent movie. It was the second one that made people physically ill.

Wee Pals 1/10/10

So the police in this city monitor how fast people drive on the sidewalk? Or in the park? That's not the only problem I have with this strip. The fact that Morrie takes three panels to do what two could've done easily just urks me.

Dog Eat Doug 1/10/10

I know the baby just crawled away to break that shiny thing but I'd like to think the dog ate the baby. This pleases me.

Mother Goose & Grimm 1/10/10

Yeah! You wouldn't understand you weird purple cat, raccoon thing.

Compu-Toon 1/10/10

Hmm, that's not how High-Defintion works. That's not how it works at all.

Momma 1/10/10

Hmm, that's not how thoughts works. That's not how they work at all.

What did Momma honestly expect to find? You'd think she'd know her son better by now.

The Amazing Spider-Man 1/10/10

I have been following Spider-Man over at Meekrat and I clearly remember when Wolverine left but we got a glimpse of Sabretooth and I was excited. Then we got a stupid story about Sandman's daughter and the day being saved by a fricking henchman--not ol' Web-head. So now Sabretooth is back. Will Wolverine be back as well?

Hillbilly Hell-Hole

It's Thursday again, and that means you're stuck with me for another two days. Before we get started, there's something I'd like to share. Now, if you read the MEG, you already know this, but I'm sharing it anyway. I do this comic book-based thing called Friday Night Fights, and one of my entries made it to the final round! So if you could go and vote for my entry (voting ends tomorrow night) it would be much appreciated. It's #6 (Aquaman kicking Superboy). Thanks in advance.

Ziggy, 12/10/09

Today's Ziggy is about fish masturbation. Would someone get Tom Wilson back on his meds, please?

Gasoline Alley, 12/10/2009

I know he's just some uneducated yokel, but saying something has any kind of kleptomaniac would mean they have an actual person (or other creature capable of theft.) He should at least realize that, and I wouldn't be so bothered if they just said the cat had South Pawsey Kleptomania. It still wouldn't make any sense, but it'd be better. I'd also like to point out that the last panel of this is pure gold. That is one concerned doctor cat.

Heart of the City, 12/10/09

A lame pun? I expect better of both Dean and Mark Tatulli. For shame, you two. For shame!

Ginger Meggs, 12/10/09

It's not a real career option, but according to various sources, Jediism is a quickly growing religion in Australia, where this strip takes place. So while Ginger can't get paid for getting kicked out of grocery stores for wearing Jedi robes, he can certainly do so freelance and know others may be doing the same.

Todd the Dinosaur, 12/10/09

At first, I was heavily disturbed by this strip because, while I was sure monkey blood wasn't actually monkey blood, I couldn't be certain. What sort of people would put blood on a cut, especially blood from a monkey? Especially with AIDS and everything. Then I did some research (sum total of my research) and my fear about it being actual primate blood was put to rest. However, I did find out that it hasn't been available in the United States for over ten years due to mercury content. That's pretty crazy, if not as crazy as slathering primate blood on open cuts. I find the last panel particularly disturbing.

Curtis, 12/10/09

Why do they always put "Onion" in quotation marks? This bothers me. Or are the quotation marks part of his name, because he's some sort of would-be hip-hop artist? Do they do that? I have no idea.

Barney Google and Snuffy Smith, 12/10/09

If God were to bring down a second Great Deluge (therefore breaking his promise to never do such a thing again) then it's pretty reasonable that he'd take out Snuffy Smith's hillbilly hell-hole first. Sadly, it would seem that none of the residents died or even suffered. This is unfair.

The Doozies, 12/10/09

Putting Mell Lazarus in a "Learn to Draw" video is about the worst thing someone could do, probably. Unless it's an example of how not to do it, that is.

Saturday is for Fun

Hey you. Want to read something funny? Well then feast your hungry eyes upon my glory and rejoice, for you are saved from internet boredom!

Gil Thorp 7/15/09
gil thorp 7-15
Really? Gil Thorp, a man that destroys all he touches, can't think of anyone that he's angered? I find that hard to believe. He must really be hitting it hard to forget all the people that he's hurt over the years. There must be hundreds of families that would love to see Gil in a pine box.

Cathy 7/15/09
cathy 7-15
Can I just say that Cathy really needs to cut down on the volume of words it uses. At the current rate of consumption, we will run out of words by the year 2021. Most of the waste can be attributed to horrible comic strips like Cathy and people who blog about ridiculous conspiracies. Considering we have no viable alternative to words, conservation is our only choice. Comic strip syndicates, here my plea: cancel Cathy now and help preserve our precious words.

Compu-Toon 7/17/09
computoon 7-17
Is this supposed to be funny or sad?

It makes me kind of horny.

Ginger Meggs 7/17/09
ginger megs 7/17
Um...yeah. Didn't NYPD Blue end years ago? Also, video games do not encourage violence. If they did, I would have killed thousands of people by now. Literally, thousands.

I do like the extra note. Point-and-click indeed.
