The New Guy

Hello. Meekrat here. I've switched to Thursdays due to job issues, but here's your comic. Except that one guy. He won't leave me alone.

As always, you can see more of Subject M, Aico, and the other characters who have somehow been established despite the comic currently taking place on a sealed space-faring orb at the Meekrat Entertainment Group... er, Meekrat's Emporium of Nonsensery. We... I changed the name.

My Charlie Brown Vase!

When DC announced their relaunch a few months ago, people quickly noted that the Justice Society of America were nowhere to be seen and that the JSA are not even a part of the new universe. Well, DC just announced that the JSA will be returning. Here's the story from iFanboy.

The JSA is my favorite superhero team so I welcome their return. Heroes from that era were so original and unique. Green Lantern, Hourman and Mister Terrific were my favorite.

All right, let's get on with today's comics.

Crankshaft
Can't anything ever go right in the Funkyverse? I swear to god there is more pain and hurt--both emotional and physical--in this universe than any other universe in existence. And that includes Universe-471L "The Bully Universe".

by Chuck Asay and Zits
In a roundabout way, possibly. Give poor people more money and they will spend more which helps boost the economy which creates a demand for products leading companies to possibly to begin hiring again....
What the hell, Jeremy! Not yet having the privilage of having a teenager in the house I have to wonder do they really just destroy things? I certainly hope not because I don't have the tools (re: chains) to deal with them.

Hi & Lois
You better do as Thurston says Hi or else you will wind up at the bottom of that water hazard behind you.

Dear Pab Sungenis, In order for a citation to be valid on Wikipedia, the source must be a third-party source so something like a newspaper article about you that says you are from Vineland. You cannot be your own citation. In fact, I noticed that someone added this comic strip to the Vineland article as the citation which doesn't actually verify that you are from Vineland. Also, I am questioning the validity of you actually being included in the "Notable People" section especially since you yourself do not have an article. Sincerely, Brian - Wikipedia Editor since 2006.

Recalculating....

What a beautiful day...at least in my neck of the woods.  Which mean tomorrow it will snow.  We'll lead off this entry with today's Garfield which will segue into some shameless self-promotion.

Garfield
Garfield
I don't know what made Jon think he is handy around the house.  But at least we know Garfield has a Facebook page.  You know who else has a FB page?  Meekrat, Dog Spelled Forward, The Bird Feeder, Stupid Inventor and the DCR itself.  For some reason, I used to have one then got rid of it.  Maybe I will bring it back someday.  We all also have Twitter however @theDCR hasn't been updated since July 27, 2010.

Todd the Dinosaur
Todd the Dinosaur
Instead of making a joke about eating dolphins and pandas, I would contact the grocery store manager who would kindly ask these two douchebags to get off his property.  I mean, it is clear that they approaching people in the parking lot.  Then I would mention dolphins and pandas.

Crock
Crock
Yeah.  Okay.  I guess this is kind of topical...

Bizarro
Bizarro
I love the Mayhem commercials from All State.  That's really all I have to say about this panel.

Hi and Lois
Hi and Lois
Along with it being the vernal equinox, tonight is also when the Devil visits Stull Cemetery.  I notice Hi doesn't mention that.

Wee Pals
Wee Pals
The kids in Wee Pals are way too touchy about everyday phrases.  Even the handicapped/disabled girl in the chair seems very upset and offended that that boy is using the phrase "handicap" correctly!!

Family Circus
Family Circus
Great.  Those dogs are eating chocolate.  Now they are going to die.

New Adventures of Queen Victoria
New Adventures of Queen Victoria
Using the formula of comic book characters can use powers while the Archie and Newspaper side use popularity, my Final Four is Green Lantern, The Hulk, Jughead and, reluctantly, Calvin with Hulk and Calvin being the champions (based on popularity).  Who would win the championship...I'd go with Calvin.  What would your Final Four and such be?  Let us know in the comments.

Ziggy
Ziggy
Does Ziggy now live in a dystopian future that looks eerily like three weeks from now?

Wait.  On the bracket, are the Wee Folks the same as Wee Pals?

A quick search reveals 'Yes.  Yes it is.'

Post-Christmas Post

New Adventures of Queen Victoria
While I really like this strip, it isn't too preachy or corny and mentions both Christmas and New Years, the text is so small you can barely read it--even if the strip is enlarged to 100%.

I hope those of you who celebrate had a good Christmas.  For those of you who don't, chances are you may have gotten the day off on the 24th.  If so, then, you're welcome.  My Christmas was good.  Got some interesting gifts.  From my wife, I got a set of pint glasses from the movie "The Hangover" and a cool set of vintage DC Comics postcards.  The postcards show various comic book covers ranging from New Fun Comics #1 from 1935 to New Gods #1 (1971) to Detective Comics #587 (1988).  I know that last one isn't really vintage but it has a cool cover:

What I find funny is that there are at least three covers showcasing Superman, Batman and other heroes having some sort of superheroic gay pride parade and I've seen numerous other covers with heroes parading around.  I'm not sure if that was just the most convenient way for the artist to showcase all of those heroes or if parades were really that prevalent back in the 1940s.
And there is even one cover that celebrates Christmas!
Hey, Supes, Santa has been doing this gig for literally centuries before you were even an idea in Siegel and Shuster's mind so I don't think you need to push on Santa's stomach while cramming him into the chimney.

I also got a couple Spider-Man books from my in-laws--notably The Spider-Man Handbook which teaches you how to become Spider-Man from treating your radioactive spider bite to creating a hang-glider made from your webbing.  It should be a really funny read.

Unfortunately, this year I wasn't able to get around to reading Art Spiegelman's Maus as I was working too much and doing too many things around to house to really get it started.  I read it every year at Christmas so it's kind of my one tradition.  I'm hoping to get it read before New Years.

And now, as my own Christmas gift, the origin of my second favorite superhero, the Golden-Age Green Lantern, as presented in All-American Comics #16 from 1940.  Written by Bill Finger with art by Martin Nodell.
All-American Comics #16
Green Lantern 1
Green Lantern 2
Green Lantern 3
Green Lanter 4
Green Lantern 5
Green Lantern 6
Green Lantern 7
Green Lantern 8

And finally, The Born Loser...
Born Loser
At first I was going to chide Brutus for getting his mother-in-law a book based on the life of a president who only known for the Compromise of 1850, being one of the worst presidents in history and being the namesake of one of the worst comic strips in history.

My own "Losers Are Made, Not Born" returns January 1st over at my own site so I hope you'll go over there and check it out.  I will still be here on Sundays and your regularly scheduled comics return next week.

Short Obligatory Posting

Not much today, folks, neither here nor at the Meekrat Entertainment Group. Well, here we go:

Haiku Ewe
Photobucket
I just wanted to share this one with you due to its somewhat subtle and somewhat delightful wordplay. Also, what happened to the other comic this woman did? I don't remember its name, but I haven't seen it for a while.

New Adventures of Queen Victoria
Photobucket
I beg to differ. Prickly City isn't as offensively stupid as it was back when I first started reading it, but it's by no means funny. Then again, this is New Adventures of Queen Victoria we're talking about. Humor is relative, after all.

So it's Halloween again.  Have you seen Google's doodle for the day?  Show me someone who doesn't like Scooby-Doo and I will personally beat them up (you have to pay travel expenses though).*  One thing that people loved to do in my area on Halloween was enter a cemetery outside of town that was rumored to be one of the places the Devil rises from to dance with the dead.  It wasn't really that there was anything special about the cemetery except it had a creepy old church standing on a hill looking over the cemetery and town.  People (i.e., drunk college students) would enter the cemetery and report feeling chills or things tapping on their shoulders.  Normally this probably wouldn't be a problem and the town would embrace their weird little heritage but when you start knocking over graves and leaving your beer bottles out there, something has to be done.  The sheriff began patrolling the area at Halloween which kept a lot of people away.  My friends and I went out there several times just to explore the old church, which was the main source of all the curiosity seekers.  The church was torn down in 2002 and the pile of rubble is still there.  The cemetery was the subject of an Urge Overkill song and was used for a battle between good and evil in the fifth season finale of The CWs Supernatural.  I'm never going to get those "ghost hunting" experiences back--I just wish I remembered to take pictures.  Teenage Brian was an idiot.**

*And I probably won't beat anyone up but will cower in the fetal position.

**Adult Brian isn't much better.

And now, comics!!

 My Cage 10/31/10
My Cage
I read the blog post on mycagecomic.com and it looks like some good things are coming from the My Cage creators so here's hoping My Cage returns in some form and let me tell you that I am kind of interested in seeing what "Jack" is.  I'm a dork for historical fiction.

Todd the Dinosaur 10/31/10
Todd the Dinosaur
Some of you may remember a few day (weeks?) back where Dagwood was having trouble finding shirts that only had one button.  If that strip hadn't ran, I'm pretty sure I would be confused by today's Todd the Dinosaur.

B.C. 10/31/10
B.C.
Looks like the Fat Broad owes Linus, Sally and Charlie Brown restitution.

Baldo 10/31/10
Baldo
Let us not forget that it is also the Day of the Dead.  I wish I could remove my skin, muscles and veins...

Cleats 10/31/10
Cleats
Are those ghosts supposed to be anyone in particular?  I mean, if you are going to show the ghosts of dead comic strip characters then why don't you show Charlie Brown, Calvin, Dondi, Little Orphan Annie, Little Nemo.  Actually show kids of strips that are no longer being produced.

New Adventures of Queen Victoria 10/31/10
New Adventures of Queen Victoria
Sounds like Her Majesty needs to get on some type of even-pay/budget billing type deal.

Wee Pals 10/31/10
Wee Pals
I hate Wee Pals.  The only reason I'm posting this is to bring attention to the gigantic "10-31" in the last panel.  Why is it so big?

Luckily, manufacturers of "flesh-colored" adhesive strips market to the entire nation, not just your neighborhood.

On a Claire Day 10/31/10
On a Claire Day
This just made me laugh and since those are few and far between, you just have to post it.

Born Loser 10/31/10
Born Loser
Chip wants to give a shout-out to the Dells, Pates and Smiths.  And a big eff-you to the Barkers.  Seriously, Barkers, healthy treats?  No wonder the neighborhood children egg your house every year and now everyone in the country knows what kind of losers you are.

EVERYONE HAVE A SAFE, BUT SCARY HALLOWEEN!!

You'll GRUE This Day's Commentary

Moderately sorry about last week, folks. Computer's AC adapter fried so I was unable to update. I have a new one now, though, so here's a pretty late update:

New Adventures of Queen Victoria
Photobucket
This comic is notable only for its fourth panel, but what a panel it is!

Girls and Sports
Photobucket
This comic, as usual, is just idiotic through and through. For one, why would you start a series on Thursday? If this isn't a series, why number it? Two, wouldn't any of the guys' actions in the first two panels give the wrong impression? What are they supposed to be doing, anyway? Synchronized dancing? Is that a thing? Why not just sit next to the girls and see what happens? I don't know, I just don't like this strip.

Baby Blues
Photobucket
Fun fact! Baby Blues did, in fact, have a television show during the early 2000s! Fun fact! I remember it being terrible.

I Hate Bradley

Light load again, folks. What can I say? Cartoonists actually doing their job well pretty much means slim pickings. Anyway, here we go:

Girls and Sports, 4/8/10
Photobucket
That guy? That Bradley guy? He's a jerk. I can almost see not spending time with your girlfriend if your team was actually in the playoffs, but it's the beginning of the season. At the very least, tell her that it's one of the first few games and you'd like to watch it. Don't be a jerk about it. I hate you.

Bewiley, 4/8/10
Photobucket
I have to admit that it's sort of refreshing that the use of glasses in this strip doesn't automatically endow their bearer with the dreaded comic-strip nerd stereotype. I do think something is wrong with that kid, though.

New Adventures of Queen Victoria, 4/8/10
Photobucket
This is funny, if only because they're making fun of "Mallard Fillmore". In fact, that is the only reason this is funny.
