Saturday Specials

by Hal Bent

Welcome to the weekend! Apparently, the theme of the day in the newspaper comics is to have guys sitting on the coach.  Well, that's original. Oh yeah, I threw in some Born Loser, because that strip just raises my dander.

Thatababy by Paul Trap:

"This Old House" because referencing a television show that was popular when Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in the presidential election is how one connects their comic strip about a couple with a newborn baby to their audience.  Oh, wait, the couples creating a family are in the age range where they weren't born yet when Reagan left office, let alone when Carter left office.

Reality Check by Dave Whamond:
Speed Bump by Dave Coverly:
Yup, it's all about spaced-out fathers/husbands in a daze on the couch watching television, the drug of a nation. No laptop, no iPad, no other device. Out of date? Check. OK, let's keep the couch theme going!

Betty by Gary Delainey and Gerry Rasmussen:

Gotta give props to Betty today: with that sentence construction in the second panel setting up the punchline in the third panel, I am excited to see next week's strips where the husband uses his phone to productively search craigslist and the personal sites for the white man he presumably is adding to his marriage.  I refer back to the first panel, as the husband's double-entendre is referencing what kink will be ongoing once he works out the kinks.

Born Loser, The by Chip Sansom:

Umm, the answer is corn syrup.  Manufacturers load ketchup (and catsup) with high-fructose corn syrup (aka sugar) to sweeten it enough for the American public and their never-ending quest for the consumption of sweets.

The Daily Comics Review: Nest Heads Throw Down

by Hal Bent

Oh my gosh, where I have I been? Busy with life I guess. Glad to be back here after a few days away from the pages of the Daily Comics Review. You know what, I'm feeling frisky and ready to throw down. Some comic must be trying to step up and challenge.  Let's get on with it already!

Nest Heads by John Allen:

Oh, it's gonna be like that, is it Nest Heads?  Saying stupid things and being proven wrong? Reality Shows? Bottled Water. That's just weak. Let's see you top these (yes, I actually said these things):
"New Coke tastes even better than old Coca-Cola";
"Dad, wake up, the Red Sox are about to beat the Mets here and win the World Series in six games";
"What in the world did you do to your hair?";
"It's possible to make a decent living with a Liberal Arts degree";
"Star Trek: Voyager is going to be the best of all the Star Trek series!";
"This Kobe Bryant kid is gonna flame out of basketball in two years";
"No one is going to want to watch a bunch of washed up celebrities dancing on television";
"Glam Metal and Hair Bands are never going to go out of style"
"I can drink the whole bottle without it affecting me"
Yeah, go hang your head in shame, Nest Heads, you just got beat down.

Speed Bump by Dave Coverly:
This was the story of my life in high school.  "Look at that gaggle of Geeks."  Actually, no one would use gaggle, we were the only geeks who knew the definition of "gaggle".

Broom Hilda by Russell Myers:
Where is panel three?  I want to see the carnage.  I need to see that hideous Broom Hilda devoured. Oh what a treat the comics would be.

Brevity by Dan Thompson:
I don't have many rules in my life, but one of them I firmly believe in is that no toilet paper with a sword is allowed anywhere near me.  Not many rule, but that is definitely one of them!

B.C. by Hart:
You mean the pretentious, know-it-all, overspending douche-bag?  Yeah, the country is full of them. Too bad the blonde lady is already glassy-eyed and ready to throw herself at him, as always happens with these walking, talking turds. Just saying...

Why Was the Breast Milk in the Freezer?

I don't think I have any Sunday to post today but I did get a good stash of Saturday comics so let's get on with it. Don't forget to check out my site which comes back from a Garfield-related hiatus.

All strips are from 5/14/11:

Pickles
If anybody is going to be a zombie, it would be Earl. A perfect end to a good storyline.

Dick Tracy
"Oh, I don't think we need a drug-sniffing dog. Do you have a straw or a rolled-up dollar bill?"

Big Nate
Why doesn't he just say "Thank you very much" and leave it at that?

Why do I do "what-if" scenarios with fictional characters.

Frazz
I know playing "cowboy vs. Indians" is politically incorrect and it should technically be "U.S. Cavalry vs. Indians" or something like that but I'm starting to get to sneaking suspicion that Jef Mallett had a terrible childhood and that he sniffs his own farts.

Speed Bump
Speaking of farts, that's what that web address looks like "fartin' cookie dot com". You know, a quick search shows that fortunecookie.com is taken but fortune_cookie.com isn't. Why didn't Speed Bump guy use fortune_cookie.com instead of frtn_cookie.com?

The Knight Life
Ew.

Brewster Rockit! Space Guy
Brewster Rockit. If he's ever been not funny then I don't want to hear about it.

Zack Hill
I completely agree with the boy's sentiment here. But MySpace's biggest draw is that it has Friendster? No wonder MySpace sucks.

Argyle Sweater
Uh, oh Billy. I'd quit taunting the zombies if I were you.

Kit 'n Carlyle:

She hasn't given the cat a shoe to eat, of course.  The food is on the bottom of the shoe.  She was just too lazy to scrape it off of the bottom.  It's still cat food, but she happens to have stepped in it earlier.

Home and Away:

That's MRS. Jumbo-bag-of-Doritos.  She's married, and there's no reason to forget the hyphens.  Hyphens are important, and as a comic strip character whose dialogue always appears above your head, you must learn to spell things properly.  No sneaky blaming your cartoonist, either.  Those animals over at Pearls Before Swine do that quite enough for everyone.

Working Daze:

Forget about those illegal immigrants.  Forget about the robots, too.  It's the clones you need to worry about stealing your jobs.  Guess what, light brown haired lady in yellow blouse?  That clone has your job, now.  You should pick up all those papers you dropped first, though, before you leave.

Speed Bump:

At least he should be glad he's not stuck on a desert island with this guy and only one palm tree.  The texting guy, I mean.  The other guy's obviously annoying and no fun to talk to.

Boots, Nuns, and Time Travel

Compu-toon:

The placement of that boot is interesting.  I definitely wouldn't sit in that chair to type at it.  I'm not sure what it's meant to kick.  If it's kicking what I think it's kicking, I don't think I'd restart until several hours later.

It also reminds me of Soviet Russia, but there's no need for me to mention that.

2 Cows and a Chicken:

I found this one to be quite strange, especially since I hadn't been reading it for the past few days.  It appears there's something that I ought to know that's going on, but I don't have any idea what it is.  There are two cows in nun outfits sneaking up on a donkey with something on a long stick.  It's very obvious that I've come in at the middle of something.

I am, however, not the type to care enough to actually look back at previous strips to find out what's already happened.  I prefer the mystery.  Also, I'm lazy.

Speed Bump:

*checks date*

Wow, this strip has travelled into the future from the past!  How amazing.  Now I want a comic strip from 2057 to travel backwards in time.  That is, if they still exist then...

Love is:

Finally, they're wearing clothes.  How long can this last?  Not more than a day, I think.  *sigh*

Things are wrong today.

I've nothing to say in this little intro except that you should go visit the Meekrat Entertainment Group and partake of the message boards, which really need a new name. If anyone has any ideas on what that name should be, drop by the message boards and let us know.

Hagar the Horrible, 8/20/09 and 8/21/09
Photobucket
What's wrong with Hagar the Horrible today? It... looks very off. Hagar, who usually has Fred Flintstone-like hands has normal hands, which looks a little weird but wouldn't be as noticeable if it wasn't for the lettering. I mean, here's yesterday's strip:
Photobucket
That's what it's been like since forever, really, and I have to wonder what's going on to make it change. Is there a new artist or something? Only time will tell, I guess.

Cow and Boy, 8/21/09
Photobucket
...unless this psychotic boy hunts us all down first. That girl has every right to be freaked out by this.

Fred Basset, 8/21/09
Photobucket
The boy isn't the only one getting into the killin' mood. Fred Basset, who is usually quite congenial, has bird-related blood-lust. Quite an angry comics page today. Don't go without a weapon or you'll wind up like this guy...

Speed Bump, 8/21/09
Photobucket
Buried in a shallow grave. The joke will be on them when the decomposition sets in and all the crows and whatnot feast upon the exposed flesh.

Neurotica, 8/21/09
Photobucket
Nope, just a bad joke.

Archie 10/25/08
Archie 10-25-08
Yep, I know when I was in high school I couldn't wait for fall so I could jump in the leaves. The Archie Joke Generating Unit-3000 really knows what kids today want.

Pluggers 10/25/08
Pluggers 10-25-08
The value menu? That move will cost him, now he only gets over-the-shirt action.

Queen Victoria 10-25-08
I don't know. Those Ziggy fans are pretty rough. I misplaced their keys one time and they uprooted a mighty sequoia.

I Can't Draw Feet 09-13-08
For some reason, this just made me laugh.

Get Fuzzy 9/13/08
Get Fuzzy 09-13-08
Ok. I don't even like Monty Python all that much but this made me laugh harder than any comic I have read in a while.

The words threw me off a little but makes me want to read Monday's strip.

Next week, The Born Loser returns.

The Quick and Plentiful Monday Comic Extravaganza

Lots of comics to make Monday not such a bitch, enjoy!

Snapshots
9/8/08
Snapshots comic
It's football season! I am a college football fan myself and my University of Oregon Ducks have been kicking butt so far this season. Not all daily comics fans are sports-hating nerds!

Curtis 9/8/08
curtis
Who are we kidding? Curtis has been wearing the exact same outfit as long as I have been reading this comic strip. He doesn't grow or age; I'm sure his mom buys Green hats, red shirts, jeans and giant white shoes in bulk.

Blondie 9/8/08
blondie daily comic
Does this make sense to anybody else? Somehow Dagwood has been bowling for decades without ever improving beyond mediocre. In other news, Blondie has a huge rack.

Speedbump 9/8/08
Speedbump
If Gary Larson got drunk one night and decided to come back the print comics world, Speedbump would be that inebriated creation.

Dilbert 9/8/08
Dilbert 9/8/08
"Get one with bacon on it."

Mark Trail 9/8/08
Mark Trail
The lazy coloring on this strip makes it look like the Trail household is wallpapered in the tanned skin of their enemies, but I guess that could actually be the case.

The Family Circus 9/8/08
The Family Circus
Sorry Bil Keane but these kids were born in 1960 so for the first time in a long time I can't argue with the hell spawn. I actually like the strip without the parents and dialog; you can almost imagine Dolly directing Billy and Jeffy in a reenactment of their favorite scene from Fight Club.
