Are Mantises a Laugh Riot?

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day, people. You better get out there and support your local comic shops. That's not all, though. Starting tomorrow, at the Meekrat Entertainment Group it's... well, I'll just let this explain things. Now then, onto the comic commentary. Without "Girls and Sports" because I don't feel like dealing with THAT today.

Argyle Sweater, 4/30/10

Photobucket
She shouldn't be worried at all. If she's anything like a real mantis, she bit off her husband's head while mating. Also, why do so many cartoonists love talking about mantises and their dietary habits? Is it really that much of a laugh riot? Unless you're talking about Space Ghost's Zorak, of course. He's a class act.

Amazing Superpowers, 04/29/10

For some reason, I really like this. Toaster with a knife could be the sensational character find of April 2010.

Gunshow, 4/30/10
Photobucket
KC Green does a really good job of imitating Gary Larson's style. It's probably worth mentioning that "Far Side" was the first comic I ever read, and its collections were the first comic strip collections I ever obtained. So I have an affinity for this.

The First Sunday of Spring

Ah, it's another beautiful Sunday and it's the second day of Spring and I am surrounded by 4-6 inches of snow. First up, visit my site. Second, join The Daily Comics Review on Facebook. We have both a fan page and group page (of which I am apparently an admin) so let the networking begin. Third, enjoy these comics.

Basic Instructions 3/21/10

Something along these lines happened to me years ago. A friend was sick but she wouldn't see a doctor mainly because she couldn't afford it but also because she was fairly certain the doctor wouldn't tell her anything she didn't already know. I also went through this when my earring got infected and I had to have it "surgically" removed.

Pluggers 3/21/10

Thing is, he's still looking at her breasts. I mean, look at those things. They are huge!! Would it be considered bestiality or would this enter into more of a furry fetish?

Dick Tracy 3/21/10

Tracy better be careful. He's starting to show sympathy for people.

Also, the flames of Hell are here to take the body away.

I Fell Down the Stairs

This is pretty funny but did anyone else get the "I came as soon as I got here" line in the first panel? Unless he's talking about something else in which case, ew.

Girls & Sports 3/21/10

I have problem with girls talking about how other pregnant women look. I have a problem with girls acting like they are the only ones who have ever been pregnant. There's a reason there are almost seven billion people in the world so you are nothing special.

Ginger Meggs 3/21/10

I know Ginger Meggs takes place in Australia, mate, but what is this FWWWOOOAAARRR!!! thing I've been seeing lately? Just for kicks, I looked up FWOAR on the Urban Dictionary and it's defined as: "That's so sexy, I might get a hard on". And the term is labeled Australian. So I guess Ginger is getting a major hard on over movie special effects which I don't think is very healthy.

Amazing Superpowers

I have been told by an ex-girlfriend that my blood has a nice sweet taste to it. Now it's your job to figure out what happened that got her to taste my blood.

Badly Drawn

OH MY GOD!! Malibu Stacey has a new hat!!

Daddy's Home 3/21/10

Who cares about the comic? Are they watching the hit FOX TV show, "House"?

Wee Pals 3/21/10

*Grumble* I feel a hate crime coming on...

Here are some web comics that are funny, so hopefully they'll make what's left of your Monday freaking awesome. No commentary which is kind of the reason you guys come herein the first place...uh... insomnia is a bitch. I took the liberty of linking to each of the web comics URL's in the title of each picture, check them out if you like em!

The DCR is Fully Armed and Operational: Commence Primary Ignition

Before we get to the review, did you all notice the amazing new banner we have at the Daily Comics Review? Our good friend (dare we make that assumption) Steven Cloud of Boy on a Stick and Slither fame offered to create this piece of art for the website and we couldn't be happier! On last time, thanks so very much Steven! On to the comics.

Amazing Super Powers 3/30/09
Amazing Super Powers 3/30/09
Top 5 ways to receive a favorable review on the DCR:
1: Make a funny and original comic
2: Boobies
3: Make misogynistic, sexist jokes in jest.
4: Be Jeffrey Rowland
5: .........boobies.

Archie
3/30/09
Archie 3/30/09
That's really more of a forehead book. Betty has a t-shirt on with a bear that has a stick in his eye and is sticking it's tongue out. The logo, along with the tattered edge along her stomach is signaling a return to Trailer Park Chic fashion; I should have probably left this one for Stella. If there was a fourth panel today I'm sure it would have been Archie saying "Well Betty how about some Facecrotch time?"

Gil Thorpe 3/30/09
Gil Thorpe 3/30/09
The funny thing about today's Gil Thorpe comic strip is that if in some alternate universe sexual intercourse became a team sport, it would make just as much sense. Is Gil getting ready to karate chop his TV in panel 3?

Least I Could Do

Least I Could Do 3/27/09
If you enjoy cross-overs in comics then this next week in LICD should be one for the record books. If you aren't reading this web comic already, now is a great time to start! Message to Ryan North: the sooner you create a T-Rex action figure, the sooner this miniature sized T-Rex hole in my heart can be filled.

Saturday December 20th

Bear with me, folks.

As you know, I've asked for the comics to be assigned, and when I looked at the comics this afternoon my brain just shut off.

Why the assignment? And apparently, Bryce is sending me comics he liked this week, and I do better with stupid comics, sucky comics. But I want somebody else to pick the comics. Do you know how many comics there are out there? Without the webcomics, even. At just one comics site, there are too many that suck over a given week or day, I don't know how Josh does it.

Which is why I've been telling him (Bryce, this blog's owner guy, not Josh) to pick a damn theme. I've picked Pluggers, and while I regret it every day, at least I don't have to wonder what the hell I'll blather on about today. (Smooth.)

Onto the comics. I want to get this over with.

If this sucks, well, it's his fault for giving me a bad assignment. And no, you can't give me grades!

Cul De Sac is the first one, from the 18th. I've only seen this comic here, and maybe at CIDU, but I'm too lazy to look it up now.
Photobucket

So I know nothing about this story line, if it is one.

This art is not bad, but, not to be mean, but it sounds like all the eyes would look like that. I can't draw for shit, so don't listen to me about art. Also, when I like a comic's writing, if the art isn't that great, it doesn't matter as much.

Maybe you have to get into this like you Get Fuzzy? I see a self-contained punchline, and it's actually pretty silly funny. Not too bad.

Frazz is next, from the 19th. I've seen Frazz at CIDU a lot, and it looks good. I probably should be reading it.

Photobucket

This confused me at first, because I know enough to know that Frazz works at a school, and there are no registers outside of the cafeteria (and maybe the bookstore at a big and rich enough high school) at school. But there are registers involved with heating systems.

Context is your friend.

Snowglobes actually suck. They are boring, because they just sit there. I mean, many things do, but they have this added factor of "shake me and it will snow" that promises excitement and it just doesn't deliver. I don't know, maybe I just haven't been exposed to enough in my life.

Plus, I want snow. It did snow on the first, I saw it, I did! But it didn't stick, something about it being above freezing.

God, I miss snow.

I didn't talk about the webcomics Bryce included last week, so I'll give it a try this time. He included 3, and I've only heard of one, though I recognize the title of the other.

Liberty Meadows from the 19th. I kind of recognize this one.

Photobucket

This doesn't disgust me, I'm no prude. I am, however, a girl, as my name can attest. Straight women and gay men read comics too.

Also, does that say that her top is made from a trash bag? Thank goodness she's a drawing, I don't think that would work.

Here is Amazing Super Powers, a webcomic I've never heard of before today, and never want to see again. The art bugs me, though that may have more to do with this strip's content, from the 18th:

Photobucket

See what I mean? I can see why this is funny. I also appreciate that this can only be done in a webcomic. But it's all so... ugh, which it's supposed to be, I guess. I mean, the dad gets off looking at birds while in his son's treehouse. And they have no pupils. And the birds in their world are ugly. Maybe that's what bugs me the most? If it was a normal looking bird, then I wouldn't mind.

This just creeps me the fuck out.

To cleanse the palate a bit, we have Pop Culture Shock Therapy up next, which I know and like. It's not the always funniest thing out there, but it's pretty good. This is from the 19th.

Photobucket

I liked this okay, until now, when I started overthinking it. No, I'm not saddened by the idea of living snow creatures (with the aid of magic). I miss Calvin and Hobbes! I love his snowmen!

To end on a high note, we have Cow and Boy from the 18th.

Photobucket

Oh my sweet lord that is funny. I love it. Mind cleansed, mood restored (I was in a blue mood earlier).

And all because of the socialism induced angry crunches.

Background info - don't read Cow and Boy, probably should, see it here and at CIDU, probably.

Well, we did it. When the print comics make me twirl my hair, I have learned I should focus on the webcomics. Or all of them.

Whatever.

Man, this took a long time and all I did was check to make sure that Liberty Meadows and Amazing Super Powers were webcomics. (Don't know why I did the second one, that would never fly in a paper.)

Two Days of Comic Strip Goodness

So we have a double-dose of comics today since I didn't have time yesterday to get everything done. The rest of the week will be better so deal with it!

Amazing Super Powers 9/22/08

My favorite flash banner of all time was the one where you punch George Bush in the face.

For Heaven's Sake 9/22/08
For Heaven's Sake 9/22/08
Rev. Righteous is such an amazing name, too bad it has been relegated to this lame-o. "How does your father see in to my private restroom?"

Liberty Meadows 9/22/08
Liberty Meadows 9/22/08
So a male pig with "post-operative swelling", does that make them "poobs" then? Frank Cho, you are disturbed and hilarious.

Frank and Ernest 9/23/08
Frank and Ernest 9/23/08
Horrible, horrible puns! I guess it's better than the old sexist F&E from the 50's that would have just been Wonder Woman cleaning the Hall of Justice.

Dilbert 9/23/08
Dilbert 9/23/08
Have you ever been talking with tech support for 30+ minutes and then you get disconnected? You call back and have to explain the whole thing over again and you know these people are sitting in the same room, laughing about your problem. You know this, because it's exactly what you would be doing if you had to work their shit job.

F Minus 9/23/08
F Minus 9/23/08
Just a quick word of advice to all those kids who are going off to college: don't major in art history either.

The Flying McCoys 9/22/08
The Flying McCoys 9/22/08
This is the last time DCR will post a comic about track marks and that's a promise. At first glance you're just kind of grossed out, until you take note of the fathers facial expression and then you don't want to eat lunch any more.

The Cure for the Monday Blues 8/18/08

Every time I think a Monday is going to rise up and squash me down, we see lots of great comics come out to raise my spirits. I hope this post will help you all get through another Monday.

Amazing Super Powers 8/18/08
amazing super powers
If you don't enjoy shocking and offensive comics, what are you doing here?

Clear Blue Water 8/18/08
Clear Blue Water
Karen Montague-Reyes deserves an award if she follows through on the promise not to bring yet another talking animal in to the comic pages. I would describe Clear Blur Water as Cathy-ish but good. The art has steadily improved and it is a consistently funny daily comic.

Zack Hill 8/18/08
zack hill
Cagney the dog is hilarious. The three guys cuddling on the couch - not so much.

Jump Start 8/18/08
jump start comic strip
I'm worried that Jump Start is slowly turning in to an entertaining comic strip. I figured there would be lots of comic reviews here featuring the zany antics of the strip's family but so far it's been all praise. Keep up the good work Robb Armstrong!

Nancy 8/18/08
nancy
The more time Sluggo spends fishing in the comic strip Nancy, the higher it climbs on my list of must-reads every day. Less porcupine-head, more relaxing at the lake with the bald 8-year-old.

Comics Explained in Rediculous Detail 8/4/08

I had one of the best weekends in a long time and I'm back to the grind today. Sorry about no posts this weekend but I'm sure you'll survive! There is nothing quite like spending a few days hiking, fishing, swimming and camping away from it all. I wont forget the trip for a while, at least until my bug bites go away. Sorry for the late post, hopefully it will be sooner the rest of the week, enjoy your Monday comics review!

Amazing Super Powers 8/4/08
amazing super powers, missing
Amazing Super Powers is a semi-weekly web comic that updates Monday and Thursday and is quite good. Here we learn just how jaded the average local network television consumer has become to abducted children news, even if they are their own.

Mary Worth
8/4/08
mary worth, enormoushop.com
Yes, this is an entire strip about the thoughts of someone buying a present for their loved one from internet retailer. No, there is absolutely nothing redeemable about Mary Worth. Go check out Enormoushop.com as it is now a hilarious spoof site made by Josh at Comics Curmudgeon.

Mallard Fillmore
8/4/08
mallard fillmore sucks
Barack Obama is such an elitist that he can see through his eyelids. He has also never heard of Budweiser, one of the worlds crappiest beers. This is spite of their billions of dollars worth of television, print, radio, internet and billboard ads that have been everywhere for the last 30 years at least. I know we avoid politcal cartoons but this comic is just bad, regardless of your party affiliation. For daily digust of MF, check out Duck and Cover - another great comic blog.

Wizard of Id
8/4/08
wizard of id
"You'd have to be hired first for me to actually fire you, logistically speaking, but my readers are idiots. Plus if anybody notices, I've only got 3 panels to work with so they'll give me a break. I mean my whole wizard lab consists of this bucket and this little flask here." So so much wrong with Wizard of Id it makes my head spin.

Snapshots 8/4/08
snapshots comic strip, funny environmentalism comic
Jason Love is the funniest unsyndicated cartoonist I have ever found. He is so consistent and puts out so much work you wonder how he gets time to do stand-up comedy too. Not an explanation of this daily comic, just a question: why hasn't this guy gotten picked up yet?
