The Daily Comics Review: Manic Monday

by Hal Bent

I realized today reading the comic strips, that a number of them seemed to have left off a panel or cut off the text a bit early.  So today I decided it was time to be charitable and finish the strips for the creators.

Andertoons by Mark Anderson:

...it was one of those babies from your child smuggling ring that crawled away.

Ziggy by Tom Wilson & Tom II:
...and the police are on their way to arrest you, you pants-less creep!

Zack Hill by John Deering:
...and now he's humping my leg. Thanks, you jerk.

Thin Lines by Randy Glasbergen:
...besides, your cholesterol is so high you'll be dead next week, so eat whatever the hell you want.

Rose is Rose by Don Wimmer / Created by Pat Brady:
...and I could get the hell away from my annoying wife and idiot kid for a few precious minutes each day.

Real Life Adventures by Gary Wise and Lance Aldrich:
...What now? Let me tell you what now. I'ma call a couple of hard, pipe-hittin' niggas to go to work on homes here with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch.

Last Kiss by John Lustig:
that's right, I am different, Biff--I KNOW you're a whiny loser!

It's All About You by Tony Murphy:
..except for that weekend I went out for drinks with Larry on Friday night and he slipped me a rufinol cocktail and I woke up Sunday night in an alley---I shudder to imagine, but I got caught up on my rest for sure!.

Tony Murphy, creator of the comic strip It's All About You has announced that he is ending his comic strip after only being in syndication for three years.  It looks like Murphy chose to end it on his own citing "lack of client papers" so the syndicate may have been looking at ending it sooner or later anyway.

Also, Stone Soup celebrated its 15th anniversary on November 20th.  Also, Stone Soup is the top-selling Cathy replacement so double good news for creator Jan Eliot.

And speaking of comics that have ended:

Calvin's head does not look proportionate to his body.

Also, Calvin and Hobbes turned 25 on November 18th.

Herb & Jamaal 11/21/10

Laugh or cry all you want, Herb.  You've been pulled over for driving while black, just like in that episode of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air".

Pickles and Barney & Clyde 11/21/10

These two just made me laugh.

Slylock Fox 11/21/10
Photobucket
It's good to know that even though there is no crime within miles of him, Slylock is accusing people of wrong-doings that he created in his own mind.

Amazing Spider-Man 11/21/10
Photobucket
Can Spider-Man not handle anything himself?  He's always having to ask for help in this strip.  And he's always getting help from heroes who don't exactly need Spider-Man around.  Wolverine, Iron Man, Thing.  I know the comic strip version of Spider-Man is the laziest superhero in the world but does he have to be so blatant about it?

Born Loser 11/21/10

What a waste of steak.  I don't care how long that steak was in the refrigerator apparently just lying on the shelf, unwrapped, you do not give it to the dog.

I love... lamp.

So, now that things have calmed down a bit, let me introduce myself. I'm Brian (formerly known in comment sections as bman) and I have a webcomic called The Underfold, and a collaborative project called Carafe (with Mike P and some stuff by xy!). Maybe one day they'll be popular enough to be ripped a new one on a daily basis like these next comics.

One can only be so lucky.

LIFE INSURANCE. Sheesh. Do we need to be writing these jokes for these people? If they need help with their punchlines for things as simplistic as that... I'm right here.

What just happened? Did that man just throw away his man card for a CARAMEL MACCHIATO? I dare say he had no dignity in the first place. And besides, what kind of strange form of begging is this? Is caramel macchiato the official flavor of the Winter Olympics? If so, it explains... a lot.

Hahahahaha oh, artists are so poor and soulless. Ha!

I may not agree with this joke because it's stupid, but I'm amazed that he was able to paint black letters with red paint.

That guy's a jerk. And what a terrible place to work for a balding, fat, straight, old man. How much help is he to all the women and gay dudes coming in there looking for a lamp to spruce up their feng shui?

It's because some people don't have the balls to give you the finger walking down the hall at work. Take it as it comes guys. Sheesh.

"I also lost my guitar 'cause I'm a drunk."

It also looks as though he's gone and lost his happiness... so that could be something to sing about. If he ever finds his guitar.

That concludes Tuesday's comic review. Peace.

The Express Stops Here

Remember, remember the second of November.

Oh wait, that's a few days away and I'm not English. Well, it is a good idea to remember that it's the second day of November. Only 52 more shopping days until Christmas.

Adam@Home 11/2/09
adam @ home
1. There were likely no beans involved in the making of the coffee Adam is talking about. I mean, they were beans at one point but they were ground and packaged long before they got to Adam.

2. Why would a boss limit your coffee intake? Unless you work at a coffee shop and are drinking all the coffee that's supposed to be for the customers I don't see a problem. Maybe he was peeing all the time from so much liquid stimulant.

Broom Hilda 11/2/09
broom hilda
How the hell do you mess that up? Everybody that understands English knows that express means fast. In order to be fast, you can't be stopping all the time.

Maybe English is her second language. I wonder what her first is?

It's All About You 11/2/09
it's all about you
The tortured logic of an asshole is truly a wonder to behold.

Why doesn't he Facebook or Twitter his sister? Then he could ignore her all the time instead of just when she calls.

Close to Home 11/2/09
close to home
This joke is as old as the mattress and as false as the statement "Sarah Palin is a smart person."

I've never understood why this joke is supposed to be funny. I guess it's always fun to laugh at gullible people.

By the way, do you want to buy a bridge?

Wednesday is the new Tuesday

Tuesday has come and gone leaving us with a Wednesday. Sorry about the other day but my computer was acting up and I lost my portal to the internet. My neighbor isn't getting service anymore. I'll figure something out. Today is extra large to make up for yesterday.

It's All About You 10/21/09
it's all about you
Are people really this petty? Would you go through all that work simply to win an argument? I wouldn't, not when I could just ignore the other person completely. That way I avoid an argument and cleaning. I am a genius.

Daddy's Home 10/21/09
daddy's home
This joke was almost funny when I saw it on a TV commercial 4 or 5 months ago.

The switcheroo doesn't work very well in comic strips in general and Daddy's Home has not shown the quality of writing to pull it off. I move to kill this strip immediately for going beyond it's bounds.

Garfield 10/21/09
garfield
How large is Garfield anyway? Most of the time he doesn't seem to be much larger than an average house cat, but one of the standby jokes is how enormous he is. And is he sitting on a stool when they are at the counter/table/whatever the hell they're at? Because if he's not, then he is really tall.

The Doozies 10/21/09
the doozies
The setup for this joke is pretty terrible. The punchline has little to do with the first two panels other than the invisible guy likes to be naked.

Think of all the potentially naked invisible people around you right now. Makes you wonder if the schizophrenics know something we don't.

Last Kiss 10/21/09
last kiss
I like Last Kiss, but this joke was old many moons ago.

The caption could make a great science fiction movie though. It would be about a supermodel that accidentally eats too many calories and grows to gigantic proportions and then destroys the city. It would only be shown in drive-in theaters to maximize the 1950's feel. Too bad there are only about 10 drive-ins left in the world.

Bizarro 10/21/09
bizarro
Also known as a siezure. Somebody should call an ambulance.

RIP Twitter

You'll get only two comics today and you'll like it.

It's All About You 8/10/09
Photobucket
It's official, Twitter has jumped the shark. Nearly every comic strip has mentioned it which means that we can now begin searching for the next big thing is social networking. Any ideas?

Speaking of Twitter, you can follow me at: http://twitter.com/the_original_xy

Or you can follow The DCR at: http://twitter.com/TheDCR

Bozo 8/10/09

It's funny because accountants are unemployed. It's not funny because that isn't true. And it would have made more sense back in April before Goldman Sachs announced earnings of over $3 billion.

You Don't Know Dick

Welcome one and all, to another scintillating edition of The Daily Comics Review. Today you'll find old ladies doing things you really don't want to see them doing, a really old strip that has clearly gone insane, and some other really boring comic that is terrible. Enjoy!

The Middletons 6/9/09
the middletons 6-9
Thing number 4 you don't want to catch your mother doing: surfing porn sites with only one hand.

That's a pretty weird fetish too. I don't think I've ever heard of people screwing pastries. I know that some people like food, but I had no idea that there were sub-groups within the food fetish.

Dick Tracy 6/9/09
dick tracy 6/9
Is it really necessary to tell the reader that Dick is disguising his voice? Maybe we aren't the smartest people in the world, but give us a little credit. I'm pretty sure more people are confused by the explanation than by what Dick is actually doing.

Also, his name is Dick, hehe.

It's All About You 6/6/09
it's all about you 6-9
I agree, you should be other people because you are both really, really boring and lame. If one of you was a hero or a villain, or at least homeless or something, this strip might actually be of interest to people.

That's all for today. Come back tomorrow. Or else.

The Late Review

Let me firstly apologize for posting at ten-thirty in the evening, when all your comic-review-eagerness has pretty much faded. It was finals week at my college, and although I dearly love reviewing comics, my leech of an education decided to bite me in the face and hang on tightly. As it is, I've decided to review more comics in a desperate attempt to make up for the late update. All comics are from today, May 20th. Enjoy.

9 to 5

Okay, so dude. Those are some of the lyrics of the chorus, the actual song is called "Sixteen Tons." I suppose I'm one of the few people in the world who know that, but jeeze, research it before you put it in your comic.
Also, that must be a mockingbird - if I were a bird sitting in a tree without a care in the world, I would totally mock the idiotic human in a plaid suit on his way out the door to work. I mean, really. Nyah nyah. The bird has every right to gloat.

Brewster Rockit

Wouldn't that be awful? Until now, I never really thought about how fast a "Fear Epidemic" would spread. If people were afraid of fear, you'd get scared, and then become afraid of your own fear, and people would be afraid of your fear, and you'd be afraid of theirs, and...
ugh, makes me want to crawl into a hole and die. Okay, Brewster Rockit, you've ruined my evening; happy?

Domestic Abuse

...but the two ice cream cones didn't, as their story was rather beautiful just as it happened. Besides, they had no mouths to talk about it anyway. However, if they could have spoken, this is the story they'd tell...
You see, Mr. Chocolate was sitting quietly at home, in an old dusty chair, studying a crossword puzzle, when the phone rang. He answered it (somehow) and to his dismay was informed that his Great Auntie Vanilla had taken ill and melted. He quickly threw on his overcoat and caught the next train to Creamy Town.
It was a stormy night, and lightning hit a cow on the tracks, killing it instantly. The conductor on the train saw this, and hit the emergency switch, grinding the train wheels against the tracks with a loud squeal. Alas, it was not in time, for the train hit the dead cow, splattering blood and cow parts all over the windshield of the train. This marred the windshield wipers so much that they couldn't move, which prevented the conductor from noticing that the bridge was out ahead. Even though the train was slowing down, it wasn't doing so fast enough, and the train careened off the broken bridge into the swirling turmoil of water below. As water began filling the inside of the train car, Mr. Chocolate frantically looked around for a way to escape. He suddenly noticed that a damsel, lying unconscious in the seat across from him, was in distress - the water was nearly to the top of her cone. Somehow, in the chaos, he managed to grab hold of her and kick out a window, sucking them both out into the swirling maelstrom. As he paddled them toward the nearest bank of the river, the rest of the train was lost in the depths of the watery abyss.
As they reached land, he heaved her delicate, fragile form onto the grass, crawling up beside her, gasping. He never did make it to his Great Auntie Vanilla's funeral, but in her death, he found Strawberry. Their love blossomed and they were soon married.

It's All About You

Hm... what religion is that? If she's that accepting of religion, I want to marry this girl. I think it's against my religion to not recieve a sexual favor after each meal. Eh?

Pardon My Planet

It must be her krypto-nightie that's giving her power over him; it's certainly not her death-warmed-over FACE! Good grief, she's spooky.

Pooch Cafe

If he were smart, he could avoid the whole situation by either taking off the collar or tying a knot in the leash about five feet from his neck. Or, y'know, chewing through the leash or something.

Real Life Adventures

...There are also certain objects that you might find on a locker room floor that no one in their right mind would ever pick up... for example, hypodermic needles, condoms, boxers, and definitely hemorrhoidal cream. Ew. I sure hope it was still in a tube.

The Argyle Sweater

Before guns, they used insults... and before cars, they used perfectly round rocks with perfectly round holes in them?
Also, I thought mammoths lived in cold areas. Hence "The Woolly Mammoth." You never hear about "The Clean-Shaven Desert Mammoth."

The Duplex

Okay, so I'm instituting a new rule into the Comics rulebook: when you draw a comic in which everything normally has freakishly mutant proportions, you're not allowed to make fun of hairstyles that are only slightly off-kilter. I mean, dude - the guy's nose is 20 times thicker than his legs and arms, and the lower portion of his face is as tall as his torso. This makes his so-called leafblown hairstyle seem reletively decent.

W.T. Duck

Good lord. I will never print in CMYK color mode ever again.
Man, Xerox is going to be in such an awful lawsuit when PETA hears about this.

Lio

My conclusion about Lio today is that that isn't any old Dreamland, that's Wet Dreamland. I mean, why else would it be adults-only?

Cleats

Yeah, it's because your eyes are normally larger than your friggin' BRAIN, and you look funny with gigantic goggles on, you horribley-illustrated sports freak!
And the kid on the right is never going to get kissed unless he files down that upper lip. Wowsers.

To all of you college-going students out there, good luck with finals if they happen to fall on this miserable week! But don't study too much; make sure you stop back by the DCR to help fry your brain now and then.

Mahalo.
