Blackout Day

Lots of websites are blacking out today to protest SOPA and PIPA. In case you've lived in an internet free hole the past couple days, here's the info on that. Anyway, on to the comics review!

Candorville
Candorville
R.I.P. Lemont Brown. He was last seen weaving erratically along HW 1, just north of Santa Barbara.

Chuckle Bros
Chuckle Bros
Chuckle Bros actually made me chuckle today. I love that the bald guy is rubbing it in Mr. Six-Pack's face that his shallow emotional fulfillment is so much easier to obtain.

Cleats
Cleats
That's quite a long explanation just to get to the punchline. Are there really leagues with those rules? Also, why does that kid's dad look like a mobster?

F Minus
F Minus
ChickenNog would have made more sense for this joke, no?

Moderately Confused
Moderately Confused
Ug. I'm moderately confused by this comic. Is the second guy supposed to see a donut or something? The thing's made of stone, so I don't see how he could be thinking of food. Perhaps he isn't looking at the wheel at all, but rather sizing up his up his smug inventor friend. "Mmm... transportation make Ogg fat, lazy, and delicious!"

Okay, that's all for today. See you next week! That is, if SOPA and PIPA don't shut us down first.

So it's Halloween again.  Have you seen Google's doodle for the day?  Show me someone who doesn't like Scooby-Doo and I will personally beat them up (you have to pay travel expenses though).*  One thing that people loved to do in my area on Halloween was enter a cemetery outside of town that was rumored to be one of the places the Devil rises from to dance with the dead.  It wasn't really that there was anything special about the cemetery except it had a creepy old church standing on a hill looking over the cemetery and town.  People (i.e., drunk college students) would enter the cemetery and report feeling chills or things tapping on their shoulders.  Normally this probably wouldn't be a problem and the town would embrace their weird little heritage but when you start knocking over graves and leaving your beer bottles out there, something has to be done.  The sheriff began patrolling the area at Halloween which kept a lot of people away.  My friends and I went out there several times just to explore the old church, which was the main source of all the curiosity seekers.  The church was torn down in 2002 and the pile of rubble is still there.  The cemetery was the subject of an Urge Overkill song and was used for a battle between good and evil in the fifth season finale of The CWs Supernatural.  I'm never going to get those "ghost hunting" experiences back--I just wish I remembered to take pictures.  Teenage Brian was an idiot.**

*And I probably won't beat anyone up but will cower in the fetal position.

**Adult Brian isn't much better.

And now, comics!!

 My Cage 10/31/10
My Cage
I read the blog post on mycagecomic.com and it looks like some good things are coming from the My Cage creators so here's hoping My Cage returns in some form and let me tell you that I am kind of interested in seeing what "Jack" is.  I'm a dork for historical fiction.

Todd the Dinosaur 10/31/10
Todd the Dinosaur
Some of you may remember a few day (weeks?) back where Dagwood was having trouble finding shirts that only had one button.  If that strip hadn't ran, I'm pretty sure I would be confused by today's Todd the Dinosaur.

B.C. 10/31/10
B.C.
Looks like the Fat Broad owes Linus, Sally and Charlie Brown restitution.

Baldo 10/31/10
Baldo
Let us not forget that it is also the Day of the Dead.  I wish I could remove my skin, muscles and veins...

Cleats 10/31/10
Cleats
Are those ghosts supposed to be anyone in particular?  I mean, if you are going to show the ghosts of dead comic strip characters then why don't you show Charlie Brown, Calvin, Dondi, Little Orphan Annie, Little Nemo.  Actually show kids of strips that are no longer being produced.

New Adventures of Queen Victoria 10/31/10
New Adventures of Queen Victoria
Sounds like Her Majesty needs to get on some type of even-pay/budget billing type deal.

Wee Pals 10/31/10
Wee Pals
I hate Wee Pals.  The only reason I'm posting this is to bring attention to the gigantic "10-31" in the last panel.  Why is it so big?

Luckily, manufacturers of "flesh-colored" adhesive strips market to the entire nation, not just your neighborhood.

On a Claire Day 10/31/10
On a Claire Day
This just made me laugh and since those are few and far between, you just have to post it.

Born Loser 10/31/10
Born Loser
Chip wants to give a shout-out to the Dells, Pates and Smiths.  And a big eff-you to the Barkers.  Seriously, Barkers, healthy treats?  No wonder the neighborhood children egg your house every year and now everyone in the country knows what kind of losers you are.

EVERYONE HAVE A SAFE, BUT SCARY HALLOWEEN!!

Actual Friday Post, Live! (not really)

Hey there, cats and kittens. I didn't miss today's post! Hoorah for me! Go visit the Meekrat Entertainment Group, which has yet to feel my hot posting love today. I'm off to rectify that, but first, commentary!

First off, an addition to yesterday's post: today's Love Is...
Photobucket
"When I tell you I'm taking a bath, that's a hint, you nimrod!"

Now for the rest of today's comics:
Soup to Nutz
Photobucket
If he was that concerned about it, he totally could have just reached up and grabbed the stupid leaf. Besides, it's just one leaf. If it falls after all the other leaves, then it's really nothing to worry about.

Girls and Sports
Photobucket
I don't think I've commented on this strip in a while. Today, though, I had to point out the jerkiness of whatever that guy's name is. If I were that woman, this scene would land that guy in the dog house.

Cleats
Photobucket
Here's some reader interaction stuff: if you could pick three comics to excise from your local paper (or, if you don't have a local paper that carries comics, three comic strips you'd excise from existence) which ones would you choose? Would you choose long-lived zombie strips, long past their sell date? Newer comics which are, nonetheless, terrible? I'd choose Sylvia, for sure. Probably Mallard Fillmore and Prickly City, as well. I find all three terrible.

The Doozies
Photobucket
I offer this one up without commentary, mainly because it ties in with the Frankenstein stuff Zachary the Stupid Inventor posted about earlier.

Wednesday Post

Wednesday has come again. Hopefully Thursday will show up tomorrow.

Cleats 2/3/10

I have no idea what the hell is going on. These 2 panels are just nonsense. And not the funny kind. The annoying kind.

Why would anyone even think to have a facility for band and soccer practice to take place at the same time? And you can't be killed by a Shamwow!. Maybe if you ate it? But definitely not by wearing it as clothing. Is the joke that it soaked up all his blood or something?

Fred Basset 2/3/10

Is it just me or do they look way too happy to see each other.

The New Adventures of Queen Victoria 2/3/10

A lame joke done in a funny way. You earn 6 points today NAoQV.

And no, points have no actual value.

The City 2/3/10
Umm . . . okay. This is supposed to be funny because it's taking an idea to absurdly extreme lengths, but I wouldn't doubt that there is more than one person that thinks this is a good idea.

And that is scary as crap.

More likely future generations will look back and say, "What the heck is Wee Pals?"

Well, it's Friday. Fridays no longer mean anything to me, except I get to post here! Hooray! Well, here's your post.

Andy Capp, 10/16/09
Photobucket
I'm quite worried about that plant on top of the file cabinet. It's perilously close to falling off. Someone move it so it doesn't suffer a terrible fate at the hands of gravity!

Drabble, 10/16/09
Photobucket
This is the only time anyone will ever accuse anyone in this strip of having a quick wit.

Barney Google and Snuffy Smith, 10/16/09
Photobucket
Listen, kid, if you can't put up with the occasional cannibalism, then you shouldn't be a hillbilly.

Cleats, 10/16/09
Photobucket
Yes, because all dogs are giant rampaging hell-beasts.

Wee Pals, 10/16/09
Photobucket
Future generations will remark that today was the day that "Wee Pals" began its months-long "White Slavery" storyline, in which all the little Caucasian children were sold off and all their African-American friends learned some very hard lessons.

Mythtickle, 10/16/09
Photobucket
I like the last two panels and wanted to share them.

Inflatable Goats

I greet you from the deeps. Today is just another average Tuesday here at DCR. I have some witty comments and some not-so-witty comments. Oh, who're we kidding? None of them are witty.

Cleats 10/13/09
cleats
Ooooo, burn. Take that you inked up people.

La Cucaracha 10/13/09
La Cucaracha
As long as Meryl Streep gets eaten my a hippo, that will be the greatest movie ever.

Not that I have anything against Meryl, it would just be sweet to see someone of that caliber eaten by a hippo.

Frog Applause 10/13/09
frog applause
Inflatable bestiality: a new horizon. Thanks Frog Applause for reaching towards new heights.

Compu-Toon 10/13/09
compu-toon
What the hell kind of name is Cleophus? Nobody is name that and I dare you, Internet, to prove me wrong.

Also, what exactly is going on? Just where is this external portal? I don't see it.

Real Life Adventures 10/13/09
real life adventures
Listen up kids. Messing with Canada geese is never a cool thing to do. They are mean bastards and would love to bite you for no reason at all. So don't let your friends pressure you into taunting a Canada goose, it just isn't smart.

Off the Mark 10/13/09
off the mark
"Insert obvious joke here"

That angry cat looks like a cross between Garfield and Heathcliff.

Scary Asian Man

My goodness, but it's Friday once again, and that means that... I'm posting again. No big deal, really. I have nothing to say today, really, and I'm wondering if I should even keep putting links to my site up. I mean, it's not like any of the other people who post here (or have posted here) have used this as a platform to promote their own stuff, so why should I keep doing it? Well, I will think about that. Check out the message boards, too! There's a link in the sidebar now! So there's no reason not to!

Cleats, 9/4/09
Photobucket
It's almost as if they anticipated that yesterday's strip would be greeted with... apprehension, and pre-emptively made a strip to apologize for it. Good for you, Cleats. Still, even with the "In five years or so" caveat, it's kind of creepy and a little gross.

B. C., 9/4/09
Photobucket
As we all know, this strip takes place in the post-apocalypse. However, they're using caveman tropes, and in everything from old Warner Brothers cartoons to "History of the World Part One", a caveman hitting a cavewoman over the head symbolizes marriage. So is that caveman claiming one of the only females left alive? What will happen to the delicate balance they've achieved? Will everything erupt into anarchy? I doubt we'll ever know the answers.

Heathcliff, 9/4/09
Photobucket
Sick of Heathcliff's nonsense, the very Spirit of America sends a bald eagle to take care of him. In the following weeks, expect a giant animated Statue of Liberty (controlled with an NES Advantage controller, possibly) to stomp Marmaduke into the ground and Uncle Sam to show Snuffy Smith what-for.

The Other Coast, 9/4/09
Photobucket
For one, unless you've recorded all those shows, only a few are going to be on at once. Two, I would totally watch a talk show whose guests were a jellyfish and a juggling spider. Also, it's not like they can't reuse guests... I've seen Norm Macdonald on talk shows about fifteen dozen times. Which isn't a bad thing, just saying that it's not like the guest well is going to run dry.

Mike Luckovich, 9/4/09
Photobucket
The Disney/Marvel deal is big enough to warrant political cartoons about it? Wow. I just hope we possibly get a new "Darkwing Duck" comic book out of it, really.

Secret Asian Man, 9/4/09
Photobucket
That's the scariest looking guy I've ever seen. Also, just because he doesn't know martial arts doesn't mean he couldn't be a ninja thug. It's called acting, after all.

Not for the faint of heart

Hey, folks! I'd just like to ask all cartoonists that if you have a problem with what I (Mike P) have to say about your comic strip, please confront me yourself. And if you're a reader who doesn't like what I have to say, please don't just resort to personal insults (like calling me a hack) and making random accusations at me. As I'm sure we're all intelligent, mature individuals we can resolve any differences we have through calm discussion. Thanks a bunch.

9 to 5, 9/3/09
Photobucket
The good news is that you've got a working cell phone, computer, and wi-fi connection on a desert island. You can get off that island. Unless, of course, this poor fellow has gone completely insane and is just imagining that he's having conversations with people and submitting things to magazines.

Beetle Bailey, 9/3/09
Photobucket
I don't know what's the most disturbing thing about this: the fact that they're torturing Sgt. Snorkel, or the fact that Beetle Bailey is dealing with fairly current events.

Cleats, 9/3/09
Photobucket
Ultimate fencing (which seems to involve people bringing in whatever sword-like weapons they want to use) is a fantastic idea, and one I can totally get behind. However, this strip disturbs me because one prepubescent child is envisioning another prepubescent child in a metal bikini, and that's just all kinds of wrong.

Dick Tracy, 9/3/09
Photobucket
The ringmaster is in love with the tiger. Oh god, but today's comic page is like looking into the true face of an elder god.

The Grizzwells, 9/3/09
Photobucket
The second panel should be, "Obviously, they're two different sports." But then we couldn't have the... "punchline" in panel three. I think this is the worst attempt at a joke I've ever seen outside of a political strip, or my least favorite comic strip. I mean just... wow. Usually this strip is pretty decent, but I guess everyone has their off days. And at least the bear has the decency to look horrified about it. Thank you for being self-aware, bear.

Herb and Jamaal, 9/3/09
Photobucket
This, however, is just downright gross. And Jamaal wonders why he can't get with Yolanda...

Flying Cows Will Eat You

I'm tired and cranky so let's get this over with.

And don't ask about the post title. There are maybe 3 or 4 people on the Earth that know what it means.

Shoe 7/13/09
shoe
Who remembers last summer? Do you remember how much gas was? I do because I worked at a gas station. Do you want to know how much it was? A FUCKING LOT MORE THAN IT IS NOW!!! They had to send us a decimal point so we could put it on the 4. That's how much more expensive it was. Now it's under $2.50 where I live, that sounds less expensive than last year when it was $4. But maybe Shoe is better equipped to tell me which number is higher than the other since it's a crappy comic strip that no one gives a shit about anymore.

Cleats 7/13/09

I find that skin cancer goes well with black, but then what doesn't go with black?
