Wednesday Post

Wednesday has come again. Hopefully Thursday will show up tomorrow.

Cleats 2/3/10

I have no idea what the hell is going on. These 2 panels are just nonsense. And not the funny kind. The annoying kind.

Why would anyone even think to have a facility for band and soccer practice to take place at the same time? And you can't be killed by a Shamwow!. Maybe if you ate it? But definitely not by wearing it as clothing. Is the joke that it soaked up all his blood or something?

Fred Basset 2/3/10

Is it just me or do they look way too happy to see each other.

The New Adventures of Queen Victoria 2/3/10

A lame joke done in a funny way. You earn 6 points today NAoQV.

And no, points have no actual value.

The City 2/3/10
Umm . . . okay. This is supposed to be funny because it's taking an idea to absurdly extreme lengths, but I wouldn't doubt that there is more than one person that thinks this is a good idea.

And that is scary as crap.

On the "Cleats" comic, the band is Spinal Tap, which was famous for having drummers die in strange ways (one spontaneously combusted onstage, another choked to death on someone else's vomit).

So, the idea that the drummer died in a weird way is the "joke."

oh. that must have been in an earlier comic.

Nope, it wasn't in an earlier comic; "This is Spinal Tap" is a well known mockumentary which Cleats is paying homage to here.

well how the hell am i suppose to know that's Spinal Tap. i know it's a movie from the '80's but there isn't much to go on in the strip.

it still doesn't explain why there is a soccer/band practice facility and it definitely doesn't make the Shamwow! thing funny.

You should definitely check out "This is Spinal Tap." It's funny and there's a whole clot of people who laugh when you say "turn it up to 11."

Seriously. It's good. Much better than this cheesy comic strip.

This is a good example of how, when you use a cultural reference as a substitute for a joke, you have to make sure your joke is funny enough that knowledge of the cultural icon isn't necessary.

I absolutely understand how it would be completely confusing if you haven't seen Spinal Tap. I've seen the movie and I still think the gag in this strip is stupid and pointless.
