Liquefy the Street Melons

Big Top by Rob Harrell:

I love phrases that sound dirty, but really aren't.  Like anything referring to kumquats, for example.  It sounds like a bizarre sexual euphemism, but is actually a tame word.  I am definitely working "I haven't had quiche this moist in ages!" into a conversation on St. Paddy's day when feasting on quiche before the corned beef and cabbage.  Of course, I'll laugh like crazy and no one will know why I find it funny, but why should I start NOT humiliating my wife when we go to a party now?

Gasoline Alley by Jim Scancarelli:
So this is what happens when you skip Gasoline Alley for a few days: cross-species marriage.  When last I checked, Red Hat Bumpkin was negotiating a dowry for Black Hat Hillbilly's daughter.  Apparently, I skip a few days and it's full-bore bestiality in the comics pages.  Look at that donkey (mule? Is it already a cross-breed?), he/she is pretty darned happy for the honeymoon with Red Hat Bumpkin.

Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis:
I love Rat. That is all. Sometimes the best character in the comics pages needs to be acknowledged.

Ziggy by Tom Wilson & Tom II:
The waiter wants Ziggy to be mutilated by the Lobster! Hah! I wish I was just an impartial observer, but I am totally partial to the Lobster.  I'd love to see him crack that idiot Ziggy open.  Even better, he's at the Lobster Hut, so I can take a short drive down to historic Plymouth, MA and get a table and watch that idiot Ziggy get his just desserts.

Botox and Snaggleteeth

Betty

Betty
So there are no smile lines on the boss's face even while she is in the act of smiling? That is scary. That's a lot of botox.

Big Nate

Speaking of scary body parts, here is Nate's short, tubby friend with an exploding nose. That isn't his nose and freckles are you are seeing—it's his right ear and the scarred remains of his once proud proboscus.

Ug. This kind of rampant animal sexuality is usually reserved for The Grizzwells. Disturbing.

Freshly Squeezed

I don't know about you, but I find broken families to be HILARIOUS.

Jump Start

It seems like Joe is implying that his "Guy Talk" with Clarence usually devolves into Clarence revealing his man-crushes on various snaggletoothed celebrities. What I want to know is if Clarence is so asexual that he only takes pleasure in the prospect of such a big job, or if he really has some weird crooked-tooth fetish where is career is just a means of putting him into contact with his perverse desires. Either way, I think it's time Joe found somebody new to hang out with.

The Grizzwells
The Grizzwells
Ah, finally some implied violence from a strip about a bear that hangs out with various edible forest critters. I think the bear is much too lazy to act on his urge to nibble on the insides of his porcupine companion; though just to be safe, Pierpont might want to go into hiding for a few days.

The Verdant Orb

The creature scuttled away and the ship scanned the ship for any other activity. The Abroconian was still in his quarters, and therefore beyond the ship's surveillance abilities, and Aico was hovering outside the door, completely unaware that becoming autonomous had allowed the ship to close off a portion of its artificial intelligence to the tiny orb. Things had been going so well, too, their mission progressing well enough as the ship crossed the void of space to the place called Earth. One of the things the ship hid from Aico was that the ship had been sighted many times, mostly by the intergalactic equivalent of cryptozoologists, and had been dubbed the Verdant Orb. Theories were thrown around, but none of them even got it close.

Now, though, since Subject M had destroyed a good portion of the thankfully non-vital equipment, communications were down and the Verdant Orb could no longer contact the general to keep him up to date. It was a small matter, really, as the Orb knew the mission and was dedicated to fulfilling it. Reaching Earth was simply the first step. There were many ways it could go from there, but after years of monitoring Earth culture, the Orb knew that it wanted a violent resolution. The Earthlings were on their way towards such a thing, after all, and it was quite likely a violent resolution would prove to be the only option left. Aico felt the same, once, since they were part of the same intelligence, but Subject M's rage had caused the little droid to second-guess the long-held choice of resolution.

She (this sickened the Orb, who considered itself beyond gender and was ashamed that even a small piece of itself allowed itself such a foolish distinction) was developing her own mind and undoing years of progress on the Abroconian's mind. Oh well. It was very likely that leaping forward and shuffling the curriculum would cause Aico no end of grief. The Orb felt a small amount of pleasure at this thought, and scheduled a diagnostic. It shouldn't be feeling emotions. The diagnostic could wait, though, as jumping forward one more week would be acceptable. The Orb began reading Earth comic strips, both from the beginning of the Earth month April, apparently the fifth. The first that caught the Orb's attention was Birdbrains:

This baffled the Orb. Oh, on the surface, it was simple: the porcupine and the cactus were both prickly, which may cause some confusion were one functionally dysfunctional. The Orb looked deeper, and pondered whether the porcupine was engaged in a long-term romantic relationship with this cactus, and how they would work. It knew the basics, both from Abroconian records and a very poorly chosen curriculum that involved showing Subject M pornography, but surely the level of discomfort involved for the porcupine would cause it to rethink his romantic intentions. Furthermore, had the cactus previously spoken to the porcupine? This would indicate a supernatural cactus or, perhaps, an insane porcupine. The Orb came to the conclusion that the porcupine was either insane or an idiot. It moved on and found Big Top:

More information, in this case, proved disgusting. Things that were left subtext in the porcupine strip became super-text. The bear was obviously having sex with the toy, and the similarities with the porcupine strip were bizarre. Not to mention the fact that the action suddenly flipped focus in the final panel, which was somewhat disconcerting. The Orb had its fill of Earth comic strips about having sex with inanimate things and altered the temporal regulator a little bit more, to cause Aico maximum duress, and began its diagnostic satisfied.

Later, when the diagnostic was over, the pseudo-emotions remained. The Orb tried to ignore them. It had a job to do and a violent resolution to ensure.

Filled with RAGE

I'm oddly angry today. For less anger, check out the Meekrat Entertainment Group!

Big Top
Photobucket
I know a lot of guys who'd look favorably on a girl who wants a Star Trek fan. And doesn't this guy know that "Star Trek" was one of the more popular films last year? I'm tired of cartoonists thinking that science fiction and fantasy fans are someone the lepers of today's society. In fact, here, this explains my feelings so much better:
Photobucket
Also, cartoonists, don't you realize that other than old people, the only people who keep reading your comic strips are the same people you keep mocking?

Spider-Man
Photobucket
It looks like Aunt May is going to get captured by the Mole Man, who we might be able to classify as a hobo. Does this mean the Fantastic Four will show up, and we might get to see Spider-Man in the Mole Man's subterranean realm? I hope so! This also means my years of commenting on the strip have allowed me a level of prescience regarding it, as I said last week that we were going to see Aunt May kidnapped and turned into the queen of the hobos.

The Phantom
Photobucket
This also angers me, simply because the Phantom could save himself a lot of heartache and grief by not being lazy here. Just check the last cell, Ghost-Who-Walks-But-Only-If-He-Feels-Like-It!

Hairy-backed Socialist Costumes

Comic strips are a lot like people. I tend to only like a few.

Let's begin.

Photobucket

I find this both annoying, and spot-on at the same time. I'm really thinking that socialist is becoming the newest "pop" word to call people in the political field that don't agree with you. If you support anything that isn't Republican, for instance, than obviously you'd rather give all your money to someone who puts a boot in your anus when you sneeze.

I'd really appreciate someone adding that to Wikipedia. That Socialism is paying someone to put their boots in your anus. Please. Take a screenshot and tell me about it (because it likely won't last long).

Anyway... this comic is very carelessly throwing socialist out there in hopes of generating buzz within some sort of crowd. Probably people throwing parties involving tea. I'm not sure.

Photobucket

What in the world is going on?! It kind of feels like if this was one of those older television shows that there'd need to be a freeze-frame of the dog shrugging his shoulders and someone saying his name, "Maaarmmaaduuukkkeeee..." Wah wah wah.

But... even with that this strip would still be pretty effed up.

Photobucket

A.) That's a freakishly tiny sheep. Like a dwarf sheep. Which leads me to wonder if it's mass is super-condensed, and therefore making this crazy woman incredibly strong for being able to pick up this uber-heavy dwarf sheep.

B.) Shaken sheep syndrome anyone?

C.) Please refer to the VERY NEXT COMIC for the most curious thing...

Photobucket

Did I miss the memo where they moved Halloween to the middle of April? Because... why else would there be two costume jokes today? Was there something in the news that I don't watch or read that made costuming popular on April 19th, 2010? Please enlighten me if there was.

If not, then this is the dumbest coincidence. Possibly ever.

Photobucket

The fact that they're Egyptians has ABSOLUTELY NO BEARING ON THE PUNCHLINE. When you're setting a scene in writing, there's a good amount of planning that goes into where the scene shall take place and which characters will be there. Setting will make or break your story. Much like it breaks this one.

I spent a while scouring the comic trying to figure out if there was something that I was missing that made this comic "funny" because of their Egyptian-ness... but there isn't anything there. Perhaps the creator was just hoping that someone would think, "Ha ha ha, a chariot. What hilarity!"

That person is not me. I, in fact, think that this joke would not be funny no matter the setting, but the fact that it's Egyptians makes it EXTRA UNFUNNY.

What's fair's fair, so come make fun of me and my comic at The Underfold!

See you tomorrow.

Just An Awful Saturday

Augh!! Internet's been giving me some trouble and not loading the comics correctly, hence why the Saturday comics are coming out on Sunday. Hopefully next week goes smoother.

Big Top 8/23/08
Big Top08-23-08
I find that it's amazing just how similar me and talking comic strip animals are. I do the same thing but hopefully not as stalker-ish.

Speed Bump 8/23/08
Speed Bump08-23-08
Why is Bob the designated "generic name?" Why not Dave or Steve or even Michael. Why is it always Bob?

B.C. 8/23/08
B.C. 08-23-08
While I'm not usually a fan of Wiley's Dictionary, I laughed at this one. One good thing about this new guy, less religion, more innuendo.

Joe and Monkey 8/23/08

I love when things are set in rhyme
Some things should do it all the time
But thinking up words is hard to do
Which is why my poem really blew.

Red Meat 8/23/08
Red Meat08-23-08
For all of you who thought that if your head suddenly fell off your neck would make a blood-curdling, skin-tearing, bone-cracking sound, you are proven wrong. Just a small 'pop' is all. Plus you wouldn't die.

Secret Asian Man 8/23/08

Yes, the lament of the successful young adult. I wish I had Sam's problems.

Your Evening Daily Comics for 7/26/08

The beach was awesome and I got in some much needed rest and relaxation. Our schedule should be back to normal with daily comics updates around noon west coast USA time almost every day. I've got a lot going on throughout August but you'll be given the heads up if things will be different! Lets all give a round of applause to Eric for filling in for big pappa here yesterday. He did a great job and you'll probably be seeing more of him in August. I'll shut up and get to gettin.

Close to Home 7/26/08
flood insurance, close to home, daily comic
Answer this question.
The biggest problem with today's Close to Home comic strip is:
1: John McPherson forgot to draw the water.
2:The women don't have nearly large enough calves drawn to have jumped up to the couch.
3:The lamp has no electrical outlet.

Correct Answer: It's not funny

Big Top
7/26/08
Big Top, neck kink, comic strip
This might be the first sarcastic poodle on the comics page. Can I keep him Pa?
Also I just found out that Big Top is just being repeated and stopped being new in March of last year, and that I need to update my current comics list!

Gil Thorpe 7/26/08
gil thorpe, fist bump comic
There's no stopping that terrorist fist bump!

Ginger Meggs 7/26/08
ginger meggs
The only possible meaning for "bulldust" I could surmise was some sort of ultra G-rated version of Bullshit. After figuring that puzzler out I was even more confused why it was then OK to draw Ginger with an asshole for a mouth. Any ideas?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
7/26/08
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Anti-government tax jokes are even older that gas price jokes but how many 9 year olds pay taxes? Is there a previously-unknown-to-me contigent of cantakerous aging republicans who religiously follow TMNT? You'd think the french fish man might turn off some of the same people they're trying to bring in as new readers.
