Funday Sunnies

Happy Sunday, all. Thanks for coming back.  A busy week for myself here kept me from posting a bit, but have no fear, the Funday Sunnies are here.  In college (you know, almost 20 years ago...God, I am almost old enough to enjoy "Pluggers") we were taught to write what you know and from personal experience, so I figured today was a day off from work, and even though I got my chores and to-do work done, today is all about me. I made a chili for lunch (and dinner! It was that good.) and now the Funday Sunnies are all up in my business.


Thatababy by Paul Trap:

This is how I imagined it for my kids when I was putting on the Beatles albums for them to listen to in their cribs. Of course, what effect playing so much Beatles and U2 had on them is hard to know. Now, my son is 11 and listens to Eminen (is that like oldies to a kid?) and my 9-year old daughter is all Taylor Swift and Katy Perry and pop stuff all the time.  Ah, well, at least I enjoyed the music.


Prickly City by Scott Stantis:

Oh that is awesome.  A wonderful Americanization of a Hispanic holiday.  I guess its better than Mexican Restaurants overloaded with drunks happy about another unofficial drinking holiday like St. Patrick's Day . "I know,let's all drink Corona's! So authentic!"  Ugh. I like the fake holiday idea...I have been crashing my best buddy's authentic Irish St. Paddy's Party since I was a teenager, but I think it's best to use it to teach diversity and let the kids see there is a great big world beyond out little slice of the world. 


Pooch Café by Paul Gilligan:

In Poncho's defense, my wife's wiener dog only eats cat food. She bought so much dog food after we got him (yes, he was a rescue, not a puppy pound pooch) and he simply would it eat for one day then starve himself until she got another. Instead, he wanted to eat with the cats, so he ate with the cats.  The vet gave it the OK, so here we are three years later and the maniac still eats with the cats.

Horrors Unbeholden

Meekrat here, taking a break from making comics for the DCR because I need to figure out a way to do it that meshes well with a thrice-weekly comic. Still reviewing them, though, so here it is:

Prickly City, 05/10/2012:

From the first time I read this strip on the Houston Chronicle's site, I have hated it. Not as much as certain other comic strips (I'm looking at you, Edison Lee) but it's still a pretty terrible example of how to do a political comic strip. It's heavy-handed with unlikable characters, and while it's been trying, bless its heart, it's not nearly enough. For example, this week we've been looking into Winslow the Coyote's history that no one asked or cared about and is proving to be him inserting himself into various media properties awkwardly. Today, it's a poor mesh of "The Godfather" and "Bonnie and Clyde". About the only redeeming thing is that Carmen readily acknowledges that no one cares. It's entirely possible that if this strip was more self-aware then it would be better overall. Perhaps in a year I won't hate it so much. We shall see, I suppose.

Crankshaft, 05/10/2012:

Meanwhile, we have this Crankshaft which has always been one of those comics which exist but are only really on my radar because of where it takes place and how relentlessly grim they are. Today, for example, we're forced to contemplate an elderly woman in lingerie and, unless I'm misreading the second panel, the fact that Crankshaft likes to wear lingerie as well. Yes, you could argue that he simply admires it on its intended audience, but this is Crankshaft we're talking about. Anything he can do to undermine happiness will be done.

Break of Day/Bizarro: 05/10/2012

Finally, we have two comic strips that feature Frankenstein's Monster holding drinks. This sort of synergy is always interesting to behold. Retired Frankenstein looks very melancholic, though.

Untapped Potential

Hey there, folks. As it turns out, web-comics are in my juridstiction for review on this site. And I read a bunch of the blasted things, so when I see one I want to put up here I'm going to. I promise I won't just keep putting my comics up. Even though today's is double-sized and you should read it. Anyway, here we go:

Prickly City, 01/22/10

I usually don't like Prickly City, because the art is terrible and it's one of the most stupidly political comics ever, but this past week, it's cared about its art and the storyline (recapped in the first panel) is all right. I especially like Lizard-Girl's gung-ho attitude towards fighting crime conflicting with Cactus Coyote's attitude as to what constitutes "good" or "evil". It hasn't been too bad, and it's a shame that next week will be back to the same old garbage it usually is.

New Adventures of Queen Victoria, 01/22/10

Leno is quite a scary person. I'm mainly putting this up for Conan's line in panel four. How he's been put into the panel and everything is just really well-done.

That kid could fit through the bars with no trouble. In fact, with bars that thin, I don't think they'd have any trouble bending them, even. Unlike the bars used in my comic. You couldn't escape those in a hurry.

Shark Attack Comics, 01/22/10

This comic, on the other hand, is genius. It features a shark messing with some guy in every installment. It's a new take on a classic tale. Also, sometimes the shark wears a hat or a wig or glasses, and it's more amazing than you'd think. Go take a look.

Prickly City 7/1/09

Keith Olberman is the leftist equivalent to Bill O'Reilly. I'm sorry if you didn't know that, but it's true. He does make more sense than Bill-O, as KO refers to him, but for the most part he spews the same garbage, just from a different view point.

If you want a newsman that really tells it like it is, you want Rush Limbaugh. He's my only source of reliable information in this age where the government has taken over all media.*

There is no comic, that isn't actual porn, that brings more skin than Yenny. It seems the only real point the strip has is to show as much T&A as possible without actually showing any T&A. If there were more comics that had this much skin maybe the comic page would make a comeback.

(Get it? Comeback? Hehehehe)



Flight Deck 7/2/09

Why does the sperm have eyes and a mouth, but not the egg? Wouldn't it make sense to give them both human characteriztics instead of just the male part? Is this another case of sexism? Probably not since it's a lame joke about a movie that not many people remember outside of one scene.

What's this? More sexism? Will it never end?

Wait. How did she destroy that old-timey computer? It goes from perfectly fine to smashed and we don't get to see how it gets that way? WTF? I bet that a super-fast guy came and obliterated it, as we all know that a female could never have destroyed it all by herself. Not even a super-powered one with the strength of ten men.

Wait. That makes no sense. Are my views toward sex and destruction out of line? Is my whole world view wrong?! NOOO!!

Well, it seems that my fellow writers have abandoned me. I don't know what has become of them, but I shall soldier on and try to do the daily thing solo, as a brave young blogger once did many months ago.
