Terrible Tuesday

by Hal Bent

It's only Tuesday? Second Monday has only just arrived? No wonder Tuesday is terrible.  To continue with the terrible, I think I have to keep including 9 Chickweed Land and Ziggy here on a regular basis. Maybe that's my shtick.  Nah, I don't think either of those are any star to hitch my wagon to...

Working Daze by John Zakour and Scott Roberts:

I just love that freaking Geico commercial.  "Guess what day it is?"  Just one point, you couldn't schedule the comic strip to run on, oh I don't know, WEDNES-FREAKING-DAY? That's just laziness.  I blame the editor and the creators, as there is no excuse for this to go out on a Tuesday. Terrible. Just terrible.

Wizard of Id by Parker and Hart"

Here's some more freaking terrible stuff...the re-animated corpse of Johnny Hart is hard at work creating new strips.  How do they have energy concerns in a medieval society?  Don't they just burn with fire for energy? Is deforestation the problem?  I would think that the problem would be with fresh water in this kind of society. Then, the joke would make sense. The way its presented here just doesn't  make any kind of sense.

Fred Basset by Alex Graham:

Well, I was always wondering how they were going to end this strip. Annoying dog killed in dog fight. Michael Vick swears he was not present (gotta throw in some out-of-date humor...it is the comics page!)

Ziggy by Tom Wilson & Tom II:

Yup, I'm taking credit for driving the Zigmeister to the self-esteem clinic. Hah-ha!

9 Chickweed Lane by Brooke McEldowney:

Conjugal Visit Time!!!

Terrible Tuesday

by Hal Bent

Tuesdays are terrible. This Tuesday is particularly terrible because I had watch my hometown Boston Bruins blow game six of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks and not force a game seven due to allowing two goals in the last two minutes of the game. It has nothing to do with comic strips, but explains why Tuesday is Terrible today.

Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau:

Oh look, here I am in the future....begging for support from far more successful children because I'm reduced to blogging for free...wait, did I say "Future"?

Wizard of Id by Parker and Hart:

So the Duke is supposed to be a character similar to Quagmire from the Family Guy cartoon on Fox (Or as part of Adult Swim on Cartoon Network if you are really a hipster or college student). But the Duke was wooing the ladies in the Wiz prior to Family Guy's existence.  Why doesn't the Wiz play this up in the comic?  Quagmire is popular. Family Guy is popular. Nothing interesting happens in the Wiz.  I can get into reading about the Duke having some far-out Quagmire type adventures each week in the name of popularity, marketing, and spin-offs.  Oh, Speed Dating. Funny...in the 1980's.

Tank McNamara by Bill Hinds:

So, this comic was put into production before the Aaron Hernandez/Homicide news broke and made everyone in New England say "Who?" in regards to Tim "Old News" Tebow.  Much props to Bill Hinds for attempting to be timely, since there is probably a week or two of time to gear up the strips prior to printing.

Rip Haywire by Dan Thompson:

If she's wishing for a three-way, this just became the best comic strip in publication.  Oh wait, Webcomics Wednesday is tomorrow...that is definitely not happening!  Whatever it is, it can be guaranteed not to be that interesting!

*

That's all, folks. Have the best second Monday that you can!

Terrible Tuesday

by Hal Bent

It's Terrible Tuesday, so let's see what fresh horror the comic strips have for the unsuspecting masses just looking for a chuckle.

Adam@Home by Brian Basset:

I'm afraid that this blog is turning into the "I hate Adam@Home blog" because I seem drawn to comic each day with such strong emotion. Today, it's the second panel and the unclad chest of Adam. Does the discerning comic viewer need to see this balding, big-schnozz slob's chest?  Nay, I say, nay! Look at panel two...it's like a face saying "ooh". Bleeech.

Wizard of Id by Parker and Hart:
This is an example of a comic that could be slightly humorous with a better, less "shove it in your face" punchline.  The comic should have the second panel show the Wizard carrying a large, empty box saying "Just setting up the new security system" or whatnot. The third panel should depict the box in front of the neighbor's house with the Wizard walking away and the box should say something like "50 inch HD Flat Screen Television" or something to that effect.

Close to Home by John McPherson:
You can push the envelope, or you can go right past the line and keep going.  Uncle Howie is beyond sick.  Way beyond sick!  That is one of those where the more you think about it, the worse it gets. That's the best terrible of the day, for sure.

Terrible Tuesday

by Hal Bent

It's Tuesday, which is like a Monday on repeat, so getting right to the comics under review:

Born Loser, The by Chip Sansom

I don't like it when the Born Loser (is his name Brutus? Yes, Brutus Thornapple. What a great name) is not in his own strip.  Today, we have an unpublished writer and part-time freelance script editor working hard to make some green to support his dreams and has to suffer the slings and arrows of this doofus.  Hey Boss-Guy (Veeblefester, How depressing that I know their names), the waiter didn't buy or cook your steak. He is not the owner. He makes an obscenely little amount of money, and he definitely does not need to hear your hackneyed joke that was old and tired when Vaudeville was new.

Bottomliners by Eric and Bill Teitelbaum

"I am also a charter member of the FREAK-daily-mile-high-club. Wanna see how freaky I am, Baby? Don't let the suit throw you off or anything--I'm a FREAK!"

Dick Tracy by Joe Staton and Mike Curtis

Umm, that second panel is awesome.  Is that kid withe the ponytails holding a turkey drumstick? Are they frozen, or are they slowly walking backwards back up the steps into the house instead of turning around.  Then antennae?  Mind=Blown. Wow. Whatever Staton and Curtis are smoking, I'll have one too.

Kit and Carlyle by Larry Wright

I add this one only because the cat looks like my cat, and my son turned on the shower Sunday night and got him when he did not see the little guy napping in there.

Terrible Tuesday

by Hal Bent

Tuesdays somehow skate with Mondays getting all the Garfield-related anguish, grief and curses heaped upon it.  Tuesdays are as bad as Monday, if not worse since Monday is horrible going back to work and Tuesday is a Groundhog Day type repeat.  At least Wednesdays are Webcomics Wednesdays here at the DCR and bring a glimmer of hope.

Ballard Street by Jerry Van Amerongen:

Speaking of terrible, how do metal bra/bikini's work like in this cartoon or a Thor comic book? Cold, uncomfortable, and constricting come to mind (of course, all brassieres could be that way for all I know).  I see this, and think that this is a concept that no sane woman would ever conceive, let alone wear.  "For the warrior woman who needs extra support!"  Also, what exactly is the blessing for in this cartoon? Is he leaving the house or entering? Not really sure this explains a lot after the reader gets past all the metal wear.

Birdbrains by Thom Bluemel  //  Bliss by Harry Bliss  //  Eek! by Scott Nickel:

Is this a bizarre circumstance and random occurrence of the Universe? Do cartoonists correspond on a platform and bounce ideas off each other like "Let's have mythical creatures sitting down at a psych exam, at an awkward angle on a table, or in their waiting room--that would be funny."  Forget that none of these are actually funny in any way, shape or form: I am just fascinated that they all exist on the same day.  Kudos to Bliss for that great Wolfman, though.

Shoe by Chris Cassatt and Gary Brookins:

As a Massachusetts resident, I thoroughly enjoy seeing the hideous, drunken politician bird-creature representing long-time Senior Senator from Massachusetts--Ted Kennedy--is still alive and sneaking away with call girls at every opportunity.  And, yes, I read the Kennedy-Bird-Creature's voice in my head with that distinctive Kennedy accent.
