New Good and the Sad

Blogging to you live from Disney World as I am on a vacation with family. Here are a few choices from Sunday:

The Good

Foxtrot

FoxTrot

I'm a sucker for Foxtrot but also for anything referencing geeky things like this series. Not the greatest payoff but still worth reading compared to the rest of today's comics.

Pearls before Swine

Pearls Before Swine

I have no idea how Stephen Pastis does it, but, in general, his humor is so spot on and funny that it doesn't matter. His sense of rhythm in a strip, and how the animals are drawn, make it even better. Well played, sir.

The Sad

Born Loser

The Born Loser

I'm too lazy to check right now, but hasn't this been done at least a gazillion times before? Lazy cartooning.

Daddy's Home

Daddy's Home

Yet another lazy cartoonist. Looks like phoning in the Sunday comics in the summer. This has also been done so many times.....

As I was going through the comics today, I noticed FoxTrot was a little different. First of all, it was in Spanish so I couldn't understand it but I powered through it thinking there was going to be a great joke at the end...
FoxTrot (Spanish)
But there wasn't so I went to foxtrot.com and saw that GoComics sent the email with the Spanish version. They also did this with Stone Soup but I didn't look at the English version of that.
FoxTrot (English)

Lockhorns 12/5/10
Lockhorns
I don't know what happened to Loretta in the first panel but it's good to know a case of amnesia isn't clouding her hatred of Leroy.

It's good that Leroy beat her so hard that she forgot what happened so now she won't be able to press charges against him.

Close to Home 12/5/10
Close to Home
I don't get this. What's going on?

Wee Pals 12/5/10
Wee Pals
I hate Wee Pals.

Bizarro 12/5/10
Bizarro
Won't somebody think of the children!?!

Hey, let's go see what going on over in Heathcliff
Heathcliff
OH, DEAR GOD!! WHAT IS GOING ON?! BURN IT! SEND IT TO HELL!!

Ink Pen 12/5/10
Ink Pen
P.J. got tall. And speaking of Family Circus...

Family Circus
I love all the looks on the kids' faces. It looks like they are all doing it for retribution and revenge. "How dare you drool on my pillow" (Mar), "How dare you be born therefore becoming the youngest." (Apr), "How dare Daddy spend more time in the garden than with me." (May), "I'm sick of brown dogs, white is better!" (July), "Qing Dynasty vases pale in comparison to Ming." (Oct), "This ponytail does not pass muster." (Nov)

Birdbrains 12/5/10
Birdbrains
Ha! Bailout jokes are just as topical now as they were back in 2008.

Mary Worth 12/5/10
Mary Worth
Who else reading Mary Worth is tired of Jill badmouthing marriage? Look, Jill, just because your marriage failed and you soften the pain with meaningless sex and booze doesn't mean everybody's marriage will fail. Have you ever thought that maybe your marriage failed because you are a bitch? No? Well, I suggest you think about that.

Born Loser 12/5/10
Born Loser
And Brutus is the master nitwit. Oh, yeah. I went there.

Gerry Trudeau's Doonesbury turned 40 back on October 26th and while I don't keep tabs on Doonesbury like I do other strips, I have a certain respect for it because it is topical, political and funny at the same time.  And to those people who don't find Doonesbury funny, I want to remind you that Doonesbury is about as funny as Cathy between 1994 and 2010.  That's right, I'm picking on Cathy.

Anyway, along with the regular comics today, here are some key and controversial strips spanning from 1970 until today.

Doonesbury 1970
The first Doonesbury strip from October 26, 1970.  I love how BD is just sitting in his chair waiting for his computer-selected roommate.  Right in front of the door.  Right in front of it.

Doonesbury 1974
This strip is from 1974 and it is in reference to the Watergate scandal.  This strip won Trudeau a Pulitzer Prize thus cementing it in comic strip history.

Doonesbury 1984
This is the first strip after Trudeau took a 22-month hiatus.  Charles Schulz called Trudeau very unprofessional while he was on hiatus.

Doonesbury 1988
Members of the Bush family have always been shown as points of light--or in President George W. Bush's case, an asterisk.  In this strip from 1988, President George H.W. Bush almost appears before returning to his normal point of light existence.

Doonesbury 1990
From 1990, Andy Lippencott succumbs to AIDS.

Doonesbury 1998 Oral
Doonesbury 1998 Semen
These strips from 1998 reference the President Clinton sex scandal and my hope that Doonesbury is the first comic strip to use both the words "oral sex" and "semen".  My thought is "Really?  Our government spent the better part of a year getting nothing done because some guy got a blow job?"

Doonesbury 2004
BD wakes up after being blown up in Iraq only to learn he's lost his leg.  This strip was replaced in only a few newspapers, ran with big black line over the offending word in some but was kept intact in most because, let's face it, "Son of a bitch!" is a reasonable reaction to losing your leg in the manner that he did.

And in today's strip:
Doonesbury
Trudeau has been talking about Bush's memoirs this week.  I kind of want to read the book but I will probably wait until I get it from the library because that's not exactly a book I would pay money to read.  Although my taxes do pay for the library......

And now your regularly scheduled comics.

FoxTrot 11/7/10
FoxTrot
I feel the same way about "Glee".  The musical numbers are actually my least favorite part of the show which a lot of people would say defeats the purpose of watching the show but I say, quit defending a TV show where the characters break out into Top 40 songs every five minutes.  At least "High School Musical" created their own songs.

B.C. 11/7/10
B.C.
Ha!  It's funny because he was raped by a pterodactyl.

Pearls Before Swine 11/7/10
Pearls Before Swine
It took me awhile to get the joke in this one.  And after reading it again, I kind of want to bury Pastis too.

And for the veterans:
Deflocked 11/7/10
Deflocked

The Born Loser 11/7/10
Born Loser
I know one waiter who will not be getting a tip.

I hate when Brutus goes to a nice restaurant by himself.  Where's Gladys?  Even Veeblefester would be better than eating at a fancy restaurant alone.  It's so depressing.

FoxTrot 9/26/10
FoxTrot
I find it hard to believe, knowing Jason and reading FoxTrot since it started, that Jason does not already have any of this stuff.

Pluggers 9/26/10
Pluggers
I love cemeteries as much as the next guy but I find this a bit creepy.

Dick Tracy 9/26/10
Dick Tracy
"Speaking of sniffing, does my finger smell odd to you?"

Bound & Gagged 9/26/10
Bound and Gagged
Benadryl is an allergy medicine which, after I looked it up on Wikipedia, can also help alleviate airsickness. I'm wondering why the cartoonist chose Benadryl instead of the more commonly used Dramamine.

Born Loser 9/26/10
Born Loser
Wow! That's pretty daring to say that to your mother-in-law. I'm just wondering why Mother Gargle cares considering Brutus does work hard all week. It's not like Brutus just stays at home all week watching reruns on TBS and goofing around on his crappy blog making his wife work and bring home the bacon like a certain comic strip commentator used to do.*

*Me.
