I love comic strips 7/8/08

If you stop and really think about all the great web comics and print comics we have access to in this day and age, you have to acknowledge us comics fans are blessed people. Almost anyone can find a comic they can relate to (especially babies and dogs) or an art style they enjoy. Recently a long time artist died and I wanted to acknowledge his passing. Mel Casson was the writer and illustrator for the comic strip Redeye up until his death on May 30th. I have not been reading Redeye long and it was not one of my favorite strips but it still managed to distinguish itself from the other generic old strips. There is a nice, informative blurb about Mel Casson here.

This is a really, really good comic.

Is it just me or is being able to lick something in to the shape of your own head intensely creepy?

The stencil artist side of me can't get away from trying to figure out how to turn Elmer's sillhouette in to a bad ass stencil. How can the reporter in panel 3 hear the narrator from the other 2 panels? I had to read This Week in Milford just to figure out the strange blackjack looking thing in panel 3 was a microphone and he was supposed to be a reporter. Thank god we have the fine people at TWIM to show us the way.

This is indeed the golden age of reading comics. You can read every (almost every, I am sure there are exceptions) comic on-line. Back in my formative years, some comics went under the radar for years because they were not carried in papers that most people read.

Being the comics-o-phile that I am, I would hear about a new strip and would have to go to the library and hope they received a paper that had it in it.

Fer example, Bloom County. I had to hunt for the local college paper that carried it. And back then it was tremendous. By the time it hit big time circulation, it was a ghost of what it once was.

Anyway, today is the golden age of comics, where we can see for free everything. In a couple of years we will have to PPV for each comic and it will be like the bad old days again.

Cheers and good luck with your blog.
