Spiders, Gingerbread, and Underwear

Hey everyone, Zachary the Stupid Inventor here with this Wednesday's comic review!

The Bad:

The two strips in the bad section today are actually from Tuesday, they just really bothered me so I wanted to post about them today.

Wizard of Id: Since when has the prisoner character been talking to spiders? Usually he only talks to that guard fellow outside, no? This strip doesn't normally have talking animals... it just bothers me when new people take over a strip and mess with the fundamentals... I guess you could say that the prisoner is just hallucinating from loneliness and starvation, but still.

Blondie: The reference to the "lady on her blog" line really bothered me in this strip. It has nothing to do with the actual gag, but what magazine writes about blog posts. It would make more sense if Dagwood was on his laptop in bed, no? Or did they not want to put in a laptop, afraid it would look to modern? I don't know, this strip is just a perfect example of that limbo that "zombie strips", strips that have been around for years but now have new writers, are in.

Nitpick:
Scary Gary: I'm not a fan of the cartoonist's choice to leave the underwear falling in mid-air in panel three. It looks weird when an object is frozen in motion in a strip when it doesn't need to be... perhaps it should have fallen on the devil's head or pitchfork with him looking up with a puzzled expression on his face.

The Good
Moderately Confused: The goofy grins on the gingerbread men make this strip funny.

Pearls Before Swine: Although I love PBS, I'm not usually a fan when Stephan Pastis puts himself in the strip... but this storyline i like.
Lio: I can't decide which expression is funnier, the cat's or the editor's....

Ok, that's it for me, I'll be doing the review next Wednsday, feel free to disagree in the comments.

Stephen Pastis making himself a main character in his own strip seems awfully self-indulgent to me.

@rocketdave True, but he only does it to mock himself.

What bother me about it is that he'll often insert himself to save a lame joke. The first 2 panels will be the joke, and the third panel will be the rat character yelling at Stephan for making such a bad joke... seems like such a cop out if you ask me...

@stupidinventor That's exactly what I've noticed. I've even thought of drawing a parody comic to make fun of his habit of doing that.

@rocketdave you should totally do that!
