Hack, Hack, Hackity-Hack

As the demise of My Cage approaches, the current state of comics consumes more and more of my thoughts.

On Sunday, Stephan Pastis paid tribute to Cathy Guisewite. At least, as much of a tribute as you are going to see when he is in character, so to speak.

It's an interesting point. When I wrote my rant about My Cage being cancelled I slammed the syndicate(s) for keeping old and stale comics in print and, in the case of the woeful morass that is King Features, handling online interests with the skill of an Amish cab driver wielding a credit card machine.

But what about the creators? Should they being willing to step aside and make room when their strips start to moulder a bit? Do we need more Wattersons and Guisewites and fewer, say...Andersons?

You could say it's easy to pick on Marmaduke...and that's exactly my point.
