Creepy Nostalgia with Steak Sauce

I am a big fan of nostalgia. I listen to a lot of old time radio, have an iPad stuffed with vintage comic books, and am restoring a classic VW Beetle.

When you read and listen to older media you learn to allow for cultural and technological differences. The technology stuff is easy to deal with: cell phones, computers, and GPS would have made the Golden (and Silver, and Bronze,) Age Shadows, Batmans, and Phantoms irrelevant pretty darn quick. The cultural stuff can be a bit more jarring. The further back you go, the more likely it is that you will see anyone who is not a white male represented or treated poorly.

But even this knocked me back a few steps this morning:

Vintage Beetle Bailey

This is just plain creepy. Was trapping women in revolving doors really funny in the 50's?

This is creepy, but in a funny way.

Pardon My Planet

And to round out the creepy three....

Bizarro

I find ventriloquist dummies kinda creepy without the stroller. But it could be because I saw this at around age 14:

On the other hand, I loved the way the Ventriloquist was portrayed in the Bruce Timm Batman cartoons.

This gag wasn't particularly funny, but I like the name of the summer camp.

Grand Avenue

Gags about robots' technological body functions are so much funnier when you know how to spell "hydraulic."

Monty

Google even offers the right spelling if you search for the wrong one.

Tom Batiuk tries out topical humor and only misses by 2.5 years.

Crankshaft

But something is afoot in the Funkyverse. Not much of a mystery though...chances are Funky is dying in a coma from that car accident. This is the cup of doom called Funky Winkerbean.

Funky Miserybean

I think I finally understand Marmaduke. It's funny if you don't have a dog!

Marmaduke

IAMs, one of the biggest dog food companies in the world, makes sauces for dog food. Most people that actually have a dog have probably noticed them by now.

Also, I have dog training clients that go through a lot more to get their dogs to eat. (How's that for a poorly concealed plug?)
