Not As Good As Peanuts's Fiftieth But It'll Do...

Rabbits Against Magic 2/28/10

I think the reason Garfield has changed so drastically is because Jim Davis stopped doing Garfield and his Paws, Inc. people now do it. I bet if Jim Davis actually drew Garfield now, he would look like he did in the early 1980s. The one thing that hasn't changed in Garfield is the humor. It's still not funny.

And speaking of Garfield...

Garfield 2/28/10

It's good to know that Jon is already prepared when he gets the urge to suddenly masturbate.

Nest Heads 2/28/10

From what I remember in school, Julius Ceasar took a day from February so July (which was named after him) wouldn't be a "short" month and Augustus (for who August is named) did the same so his month wouldn't be "inferior" to Julius'. Unfortunately that is actually a myth and just something else my teachers lied about.

Adam@Home 2/28/10

Sweet Lord. If we ever do a countdown of the worst comic strips in syndication, both Adam@Home and Drabble would get my vote. Really? February has two of the "better" holidays? Valentine's Day and Groundhog Day? Two of the most retarded made-up holidays ever? One day is depressing if you don't have anyone who loves you and the other an obese rodent become the main story on "The Today Show". And what the hell is she rambling about? Mixing up Valentine's and Groundhog Day? What idiot would do that?

And speaking of another strip that's on my bottom five:

Wee Pals 2/28/10

Blah, blah, blah. White people are racist. The second panel confused me because that phrase is generally not used in this way but White-Racist-Bully is saying that Oliver also uses outmoded racist sayings such as "a Chinaman's chance" (ca. 1849).

Citizen Dog 2/28/10

Years ago, my mom started talking in her sleep and asked "Does Veronica have flowers in her yard?" The only Veronica I could think of was Veronica from Archie Comics so I answered, "I guess. I don't know." I asked her about it when she woke and didn't remember asking it so I don't know what the hell she was talking about.

Family Circus 2/28/10

For those who don't know. February 29th marks the 50th anniversary of The Family Circus. What's that you say? There is no February 29th this year? That's why Jeff and Old Man Keane are celebrating it now.

We make fun of The Family Circus a lot in these comic blogs but it's out of respect. Thanks for 50 years Bil Keane and here's to...one or two more.

I used to have a habit of clipping out the Family Circuses that I found especially loathsome, but I'll admit I think it actually used to be kind of funny in its early days. Then Bil Keane's kids grew up and he lost the source of his inspiration and the strip devolved from a humorous observation of childhood and family life into a neverending series of idiotic malaprops.

What I want to know is, with Bil in the scene, who the heck is drawing the family portrait? Did the real Jeff Keane step through a hole in the fabric of reality or something?

God's drawing the portrait.

Those are my favorite hate-'em FC strips: the Sunday one, for example, in which Jeffy is shown praying to God to keep Daddy safe, followed by a panel in which a giant ghostly hand prevents Daddy from stepping in front of a speeding car. Did your father die, kid? Guess you didn't pray hard enough. IT'S YOUR FAULT HE'S DEAD.

Wee Pals is indeed a rotten, rotten little turd of a strip, but it will be hard pressed to top the sheer loathsome incompetence of last Sunday's entry. The artwork of the final panel alone left me despondent.
