Sunday Best: The Dark Secret of "B.C."!
The typical "B.C." strip (from 08/17/2009):
Cavemen anachronistically interacting with dinosaurs while telling rather tame jokes. Occasionally, they'll do caveman-type things:
(from 8/27/2009)
And there's also ants and turtles and stuff that talk, and for a while it was all preachy and most days it was just one of the cavemen standing by a rock reading a lame definition or pun. It's gotten a lot better since the new guy took over, though, but that's not why we're here today. We're here today because of the strip's dark secret. What if I told you that the strip wasn't about cavemen at all, but was rather a grim portent of things to come: a post-apocalyptic hellscape where humanity has been reduced to less than a dozen people and the animals have evolved sentience! A strip taking place in a perhaps not so far-flung future. It's true, and to support my claim, I bring to you this strip from 2004:
(from 07/06/2004, to be exact)
I think this speaks for itself.
When read with this in mind, it goes from whimsical caveman shenanigans to whimsical post-apocalypse shenanigans and all the seeming anachronisms make sense. Perhaps this strip was designed to take place after the Rapture, which would explain why these cavemen seemed to so fervently seek solace in Christianity.
What has happened, canonically, since the death of Johnny Hart? Have the "cavemen" become so despondent that there is no longer any solace in faith? Perhaps they have realized that the only way they can make their lives better is to stop dwelling in the past and work towards a better future? Whatever the reason, now you know that "BC" isn't about cavemen at all... it's about life after some sort of apocalypse.
I'll be back next week with something else, maybe, if the Man doesn't stop me from exposing his dark truths. If not, you can always just read my stuff at the Meekrat Entertainment Group.

Mike P, excellent B.C. observations! It explains everything, especially that "clams have legs!"(nuclear mutation) and their annual Easter/Christmas musings.
very nice.
