Deep dive: GoComics

Shall we take a dive into GoComics? Past the big brands and the up and comers? To some comics that you may never have heard of that may or may not be worth your time.

THAT IS PRICELESS

That is Priceless is one of the funnier things I've seen on any site lately. Absolutely laugh-out-loud (I wish there was an abbreviation for that) punch lines combined with famous works of art. I think this is so successful because the seriousness of the art juxtaposed with a usually ridiculous and keenly observed gag makes this work well.

TALES OF TERRATOPIA

Tales of Terratopia is different in that it's some sort of sci/fi comic hybrid and not what you'd expect with all the gag-a-day type comics that dominate the site. And while I think it's a good effort and the design is nice, the amount of text means I'll usually pass on this.

FROG APPLAUSE

Frog Applause is a weird one in a good way ... usually. And I think that is its competitive advantage. I like it, but I usually do not get it. There aren't any recurring characters and the dialogue/writing embraces its weird-ass self. It has an active comments section and the cartoonist is accessible and responsive. I like her blog too. I don't think old people will like this.

ENDTOWN

Endtown is a post apocalyptic serial comic that reads like a graphic novel. Some interesting themes and complex characters make this a rewarding feature. You will need to start from the beginning.

THE LOST SIDE OF SUBURBIA

Lost Side of Suburbia is also a serial comic, but it's not one story. The cartoonist changes stories every few weeks. He's now doing a Calvin & Hobbes homage/behind the scenes thing. This is one of the finest illustrated comics in production.

INCIDENTAL COMICS

Incidental Comics is probably my favorite non-syndicated comic on GoComics. Literate, beautiful observed and superbly drawn. It makes me wish i was a cartoonist.

NAVY BEAN

And lastly, Navy Bean, the comics sensation from Belgium finally translated into English. Navy Bean is not a typical or good or even worth reading as the characters are shallow, self-serving and let their primal urges dictate a lot of their decisions. But, if that's the sort of stuff you like, nobody does it better.
