New Sunday Feature : The Good.....and the Sad

Hi all! I'm one of the seemingly endless number of new contributors to this site. My name is Matt and I've been reading the comics and comic books ever since I can remember. When I was five, I snuck comics into church because....well....it was church and the comics were far more interesting. I'm sure I'm going to hell for that but my wife and I have already decided we'll have fun with Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Louis C.K., etc. so it will be lots of fun.

Anyways, I'm kind of a luddite as I have no blog and no twitter account, at least yet, but feel free to email me at the link above for anything that might make this more interesting and worth a read with your morning coffee. Or feel free to complain.

I decided to highlight a couple of comics each time into the Good and the Sad. Unfortunately, their seem to be way too many candidates for the Sad piece so I will limit it each time.

No worries either way. Onto the comics!

The Good......

Argyle Sweater

The Argyle Sweater

First, I'm a sucker for sports jokes that work. Second, I love the visual of starting the gag in the upper right, continuing through the skyline in a diagonal pattern to the finale in the bottom of the right. Third, that pinata is awesome. Also, love the name pinathra. All around funny gag, IMHO.

Pearls Before Swine

Pearls Before Swine

Yeah, the cable jokes been done before but the two panel shot at the end is a killer. Well done.

.....and the Sad

Momma

Momma

Just depressing. Absolutely depressing. A grown man staring at a kiddie swimming pool imagining himself on a deserted isle with women. What year is this taking place in anyways? At least have a dream in front of a computer.

Ziggy

Ziggy

Ummm......I don't get it. So, the boat is named Rosebud which is the name of the sled from Citizen Kane. That I get. But the character in the movie isn't a "Super-villain", just a ruthless power hungry newspaper owner. This, to me, is sad on so many levels. If the author thought it was funny when he wrote it, that really worries me. Hopefully he was just bored.

I think you missed the point of the Ziggy panel. The name of the boat is entirely incidental to the scene. The fish are referring to Ziggy the fisherman as a villain because he is serially murdering them.

You're right anonymous, but why have a boat name at all? It distracts from the gag. Or somethin that added to the joke "Friendly Waves" or something like that.
