Clown Shoes and Mix CD's

Hey everyone, I'm Zachary and I'll be writing a comic review here every Wednesday!

Unlike Eric from yesterday, I've never been much of a fan of the serial/drama/adventure comics (no offense), so my focus will be more on the "Gag A Day" strips, and what I felt worked, failed, or just came out weird....

I currently make the bi-weekly webcomic Stupid Inventor
(http://www.StupidInventor.com) so feel free to check it out and give me your own comic review in the comments! (Don't be too harsh! :D )

Ok, on to Today's comics:

The Bad:

(Mother Goose and Grimm): You know, threatening to rearrange the face of a guy who can store extra parts in his butt compartment, really isn't much of a threat!
I have a t-shirt that shows Mr. Potato Head looking at parts and it says "Mr. Potato Head picking his nose." Now THAT's comedy. :D

(Dennis The Menace): This comic is normally not funny, but at least it tries to portray Dennis as "cute, but rambunctious..." but this comic strikes me as mean, no? I don't know, maybe it's just me.... either way it's not funny.

(Bizarro): Dan Piraro just won the Reuben award (the comics oscar), so I don't want to pick on him, but who the heck makes mix CD's anymore! Just look at today's Zits comic!Even the "tragicly unhip" Dad is using some kind of iPod or digital musica player!

Sometimes a cartoonist will think of a joke or a funny line and try to shoehorn it into his stip's world. In this case, the joke is "He's so young, he still writes with a crayon". It really doesn't fit when it's applied to the mother's doctor, and this bothers me.

The Weird:

Really? TWO comics about clown shoes today? None of them are really funny... and I highly doubt this was done on purpose.... just a weird, unfunny coincidence I thought I'd mention. (The first comic is Off The Mark and the second is Non Sequitor)

The Good:

Today's Lio made me laugh, as it often does. I also just wanted to make special mention of the fact that comics that manage to be almost completely wordless astound me. To be able to convey an idea in just 3 small panels using only artwork is an amazing feat and kudos to Mark Tatulli for doing it on a constant basis (and he also does the great strip, Heart of the City!).

This Hazel comic made me laugh because I remember feeling the exact same way when we played little league...

Terri Libenson's The Pajama Diaries is beautifully drawn and manages to make me laugh consistently, even though as a college aged nerdy guy, I'm really not the target demographic... I still come home heaving a giant bag of laundry on my back much like the kids in the first panel...

Ok, that's it for my first comic review, please let me know what you think about it in the comments!

Thanks,
Zach

I actually that today's Bizarro was a little creepy, considering the ongoing scandals in the Catholic Church – but riding that edge is part of what makes Bizarro so funny.

You are right about Pajama Diaries. Beautifully drawn.

@Eric
True, but I didn't want to get into that, lol. Just the fact that CD's are considered outdated.

A lot of comics tend to repeat panels except for a slight difference in expression at least sometimes, but The Pajama Diaries are always 3 different panels, drawn from different angles and/or positions, go Terri!
