Wednesday Webcomic Wonders!

Hello! You may have noticed that this is not your regularly scheduled Wednesday post from your favorite slave driver, er blogger: Bryce Baker. No, it is in fact a segment solely constructed from whole Librarian cloth. That's right Stella Tamzarian, Action Librarian here to serve your snarky needs. I meant to get this post on earlier but I unexpectedly came in possession of a free 3rd row ticket to Spamalot tonight and what can I say, I'm a total Python fairy. To me, Monty Python is serious business. I would give John Cleese a kidney over my own mother. I would sell my first born child if Michael Palin needed to raise bail money. So yeah, don't take it personal.

Now usually I make fun of the "fashion" of the comics, if you don't mind fisting our Mother Tongue by calling it "fashion". But this time I thought I would go over a couple of my favorite webcomics that I think everyone should be reading on a regular basis: XKCD and Overcompensating. Now keep in mind that these are webcomics that I enjoy overall so there won't be as much bitter contempt as you are used to but you will be better off for it. Or else!

Onto the comix!

XKCD:
www.xkcd.com

Let me put it to you this way. I love XKCD, when I understand it. The humor of XKCD is not complex, often times the joke is based on the worst groan producing pun you have ever read. But occasionally the humor of XKCD is directed towards a very specific audience, namely computer programmers.

Thank God! Finally a webcomic that Computer nerds can relate to!

Why I love XKCD though is because it can be terrifically smart and funny one minute:

And wonderfully poignant and insightful the next:

Overcompensating:
www.overcompensating.com

I know Bryce has already praised this comic but I just wanted to reiterate that well deserved praise. Jeffery Rowland, the creator of Overcompensating is a genius and I am not giving in to hyperbole here. I truly think that Mr. Rowland's comics are both hilariously silly and wonderfully insightful. The entire concept of Overcompensating is portraying the life and times of Mr. Rowland, esq exaggerated onto 100 times and lightly glazed with delusions of grandeur. The life Jazzy Jeff here portrays is the exact life I like to imagine for myself when I'm tripping balls on peyote or just idly daydreaming.

I love his imagination because it reflects his brightness and makes everyday occurrences 15 times more exciting. If we all had the imagination of Jeffery Rowland I think we would all be better animals, or as Mr. Rowland calls us "human beans". I also find insight and truisms in his comic/ blog that I find myself recalling weeks later. I walk by an organic food store I automatically think of this comic followed by this witticism.

The dirtiest hippies in the world come from Vermont. *Based on 2000 data, narrowly edging out Oregon.
[Sorry Bryce!, -st]

Or the lessons we can all learn from Rowland's favorite philosopher, Andrew WK:

So I guess what I'm saying is that I will follow any doomsday cult that you create Jeffery Rowland. Just tell me the day and the doom and I will be on board.

So there we go people, go forth and read the archives. Don't squander the gifts I have bestowed upon you tonight. Read these comics and open your mind to the brilliantly absurd. But don't mail me the therapy bills.

See you tomorrow y'all!

The poignant and insightful xkcd comic you mention didn't just end. This was a secret message to readers about a meetup. The author's blog post describes the event: http://blag.xkcd.com/2007/10/01/the-meetup/
