It's Time for Our Newsbreak, so I'm going for some coffee. Tom?
Thursday again already? Wow, that was fast. I almost forgot about my obligation today, but have remembered just in time. Good thing too since there is some interesting stories this week.
From 2/18/09:
A possibly racist cartoon
Some guy named Sean Delonas made a cartoon about a monkey getting shot and the stimulus bill. It seems some people think that he was being more than cute by having two white police officers shoot a monkey. They say that it portrays the President as being the same as a monkey or some such nonsense. I don't know and I don't care, it's just a cartoon, why is it inspiring such charges? I thought we were in Post-racial America, what happened to that idea?
From 2/19/09:
Planet Karen is on FIRE
Apparently there is a popular webcomic called Planet Karen. Well, it's creator's house just burned down, killing an upstairs neighbor. That sucks for her and I hope she is back on her feet soon. If you want to donate for her recovery there are links on the Daily Cartoonist page.
As always the Daily Cartoonist does all the hard work for me.
That's all this week, join us next week when there will be some more interesting news. I hope.
Good night and try not to wake up on fire.

I hate white people even more after that cartoon, which is a difficult task.
really? why? did you think it was racist?
Obama writes stimulus bill
Cartoon has a monkey represent the person who writes stimulus bill
Cartoon says, Obama = Monkey
A Monkey who was shot by the police! Jesus christ!
Black people being called monkeys is racist. It has been done constantly in the past, and it often is the reason behind legitimizing real discriminatory and/ or violent acts against black people. Black people aren't human, they're animals. They're wild, jungle animals. They're beasts. They can't be trusted. They're violent. They attack white women. They can't control themselves. They should be punished, they should be lynched.

Considering our country's history of treating black people like stock to be sold and breeded, I think that it should be obvious why bringing up this historical, hurtful caricature would be frowned upon.
And I hate white people for it because they are so OBLIVIOUS to how it affects other people. They don't notice because to them "race doesn't matter". Race doesn't affect white people negatively therefore it doesn't to anybody else. THEY aren't personally hateful to minorities so racism doesn't exist anymore. People shouldn't be offended about racism anymore, its all "ironic" now. Its so racist that its not racist. LOL! But it really does affect people in real life, but white people don't see it, therefore it doesn't exist.
Fuck their privilege. That's why it makes me hate white people more.
i don't think that was the cartoonists intent. and Obama didn't write the bill that passed. congress didn't pass his bill, they passed a smaller one. i think the cartoonist's point was that congress is full of people with the intelligence of monkeys. no one is dumb enough to equate monkeys and black people in society today.
Man whatever world you live in I want to go to there. I have heard black people called monkeys PLENTY of times along with other degrading terms. It still happens and it isn't just your average ignorant redneck either. The fact that he didn't intend for it to be taken that way just shows the cartoonist's ignorance on the issue. That doesn't make it not offensive.
Being unaware of saying something offensive just highlights privilege even more. You don't HAVE to be aware, it doesn't affect you directly. Does that mean everything you say is automatically null? Hell no. Ignorance should not be an excuse.
Bottom line: the author was at a minimum ignorant of the possible implecations of the cartoon he created. It has sure got people talking though. Lets keep it on topic and leave any personal insults out of it.
thinking more and more about it, i bet the cartoonist actually did know the implications of his drawing and wanted to inflame the passions of people. i doubt he did it for hurtful reasons, but to drum up interest in his cartoon. not the most noble of intentions and i don't know why he would want to do that, but it seems to have worked, although i doubt it worked in a way that he wanted.
at any rate, i am sick of people over-reacting to everything. it's a cartoon. are we supposed to march everytime a cartoon says something dumb and offensive? maybe it is rascist but have you seen the shirts on t-shirt hell? they have way more offensive stuff over there and i don't see everyone up-in-arms about them all the time.
Internet website =/= Nationally published Newspaper.
I'll leave it at that. I can't go on explaining it without my brain breaking.
Stella, I agree with you.
The guy claimed that the monkey was a reference to some pet chimp that got shot after going crazy (and killing? maybe? its owner) by the police. he's saying the stimulus bill is gibberish.
But still. Monkey is gah, common shorthand racism for black people. Obama may not have written the bill, but it's still his bill in the public mind.
That cartoon is racist.
And when big companies put out racist t-shirts, people do get upset, xy. When one person does it, whatever. People are racist. But companies should be smarter.
